  1. Are you a servant of the law, or it's master? Did you inch your way on the freeway in a metal coffin this morning? Or do you respect your elders?

Rats - I read that as I was a popular toy among the engineers when I was in college :D

    "Keyholes" - what?
"desktops" - hmmm, yes, yes, do tell.
"anyplace where a small bang could make someone" - oh, yeah, baby.

  3. List anyone famous (celebrities, politicians, etc) that you are pretty sure are extra-terrestrial, in disguise as humans. Links are helpful, in case others don't know who it is. I'll start.

Marq Torien (lead singer of Bullet Boys). This guy acts androgynous and has a gigantic head.

  4. For the record, I believe in extraterrestrials.

But this is a fake, and I've seen plenty of fakes. The position of the "orbs" relative to the skyline and the aircraft window demonstrates that the lights were inside the aircraft. They are too much inline with the body position of the airplane and the camera to be exterior to the craft.

If you want convincing, check out the Jerusalem UFO videos. Although this site tries hard to "prove" them a fake, it doesn't do a good job of debunking, IMO.

  6. Weird browser stuff (Chrome on PC), like the tab with dz.com gets locked up and I have to close it. But only that tab - others work fine.

I suspect poor Ad Javascript. Or aliens. But definitely not the government.

  7. In an article about a teen shooting and killing another teen, one officer quoted as saying

    Quote

"There's not a police department in the country that allows guns to be stored in a car," he said.

I find that statement to be interesting, coming from a police officer. Maybe he meant to say "in the county" ?

Here is text of the article:

    Quote

A gun reported stolen by a legal owner earlier this month was used to kill a 14-year-old Chicago girl on Monday, police Supt. Garry McCarthy said.
"This was a fistfight that turned to a murder with the introduction of a firearm," McCarthy told reporters as he announced homicide charges against another teen in connection with the shooting death of 14-year-old Endia Martin.

The defendant's name was not publicly released due to her age, but the Cook County State's Attorney's Office said she is also 14 years old and was charged as a juvenile with murder.
Two other people, including the shooting suspect's uncle, were in custody, McCarthy said.

McCarthy said the teens were arguing over a boy before the gun was pulled. He said the weapon's legal owner reported the gun stolen from a vehicle on April 14.

"There's not a police department in the country that allows guns to be stored in a car," he said.

  8. Here's how it works:

    1. If the Social Security Agency gave money to your parents 30 or 40 years ago and
    2. The SSA feels that it overpaid your parents (or someone else it can't identify) and
    3. You, the child, are getting a tax refund this year, then
    4. The IRS takes your refund as "repayment" of your parents' debt

A few weeks ago, with no notice, the U.S. government intercepted Mary Grice’s tax refunds from both the IRS and the state of Maryland. Grice had no idea that Uncle Sam had seized her money until some days later, when she got a letter saying that her refund had gone to satisfy an old debt to the government — a very old debt.

When Grice was 4, back in 1960, her father died, leaving her mother with five children to raise. Until the kids turned 18, Sadie Grice got survivor benefits from Social Security to help feed and clothe them.

Now, Social Security claims it overpaid someone in the Grice family — it’s not sure who — in 1977. After 37 years of silence, four years after Sadie Grice died, the government is coming after her daughter. Why the feds chose to take Mary’s money, rather than her surviving siblings’, is a mystery.

  9. How could we NOT spend money in pursuit of understanding the universe? We are the only creatures on the planet that can reason at this level.

What gets me is how much more money we spend destroying ourselves, rather than trying to achieve greater things.

The problem with trying to improve mental health care on the "front end" is the Constitution.

I don't believe that. Rosalyn Carter spent years as first lady working across both isles to get the Mental Health System Act passed into law. That law would have earmarked eight-hundred million dollars a year for mental health.

Then Reagan was elected and within his first month, gutted the program of funding, and the law has effectively been nullified.

The enemy of mental healthcare isn't the Constitution, it is the GOP. And we are, every year, seeing fallout from people who are not receiving the treatment they need.

  11. One of the people involved with the video has posted that he believes it to be a rock in the jumper's canopy:

    Quote

We think we can reconstruct what happened: A pebble, a few cm in size at most, was accidentally caught inside the parachute at the landing site after the previous jump. Then the parachute was packed on a clean floor and the pebble was not noticed. Then Anders made the jump with the stowaway. This is a wingsuit dive and he’s travelling fast northwards at an downward angle of approximately 40 degrees. When he releases the parachute, the wind catches it and it shoots out to the south of him. The parachute is held back by the cords, but the pebble is not. The pebble is now increasingly getting further south and further above Anders. However, the parachute then slows Anders down, he makes a 250 degree clockwise rotation and at this moment the pebble happens overtake him. It had now been falling for a few seconds and was no longer accelerating much.

  12. I'm going with "real", not that I'm an expert ;) Really amazing, yes, but when looking at Anders' body language, he shows no sign of deception. That doesn't mean he's lying, just that he believes what he's saying (could be well rehearsed).

As far as the physics, I think it's believable. Again, I'm not an expert. Really unlikely, yes, but still believable.
