  1. hey CJ glad to hear PD is getting you a new canopy. i did some jumps on different rev's of the current comp velo up here at mile-hi and never got tail flutter and that was on the 71, 90, and 96's that i jumped up here at differing wingloadings ranging from 2.1-3.3. i never added or took away slack in the brake line from these canopies cause i didn't find it necessary but i might fly different than other people and you might like a different feel for the canopy than i. hopefully you'll get your new canopy soon take it easy bro...stu Slip Stream Air Sports Do not go softly, do not go quietly, never back down
  2. damn mike, you're speed kinda sucks but going 700+ feet isn't too bad. good job in 2010 Slip Stream Air Sports Do not go softly, do not go quietly, never back down
  3. morris, have you competed with the new speed scoring system yet? what did you think when one competitor had a down wind or no wind component, and others had a head wind component and now get 40 or 50 points due to that? i realize weather conditions are going to happen regardless but now it's amplified to a point where if you do get a gust of head wind you're out of the running for a good spot. personally i didn't think speed need to change that drastic, lengthing the course a little bit or making it a tighter carve would have been a better solution in my opinion. but i guess we all have the same course and rules to abide by. 6. Is a shorter recovery recovery arc influenced by the trim alone? or is the lift produced a real contributing factor? Swooping is a complete system and therefore everything relates to one another. it's that whole "for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction." Assuming the canopy is diving at its maximum potential speed when the the controls are released/begin to release, and the roll out begins at the right height... Is a shorter or longer recovery arc going to make a difference in the amount of momentum/speed once the canopy had levelled out? the cleaner the pilot can get through the recovery arc, meaning the least amount of input needed to plain out, then the more speed/ momentum is conserved thus more swoopy swoop for the pilot. Will a canopy with more lift recover faster due to the lift? The more speed you have the more lift you have. So the more speed you have the faster you can get through the recovery arc. the amount of lift produced by a canopy is based on platform, trim, lift/drag ratio, and so on. 7. This little "which canopy is better" thead seems kind of pointless, it's like to two religious fanatics trying to argue which religion is better, all we get is war and bullshit. If one wants to give out accurate info about the differences between two canopies so people coming up can make logical decisions then that's a different story. picking a canopy to swoop, either for competition or beer line, basically comes down to preference, feel, and how much bullshit they can put up with when dealing with a manufacturer/ rep. But once you do pick a canopy the dive and the roll-out are arguably the most important aspects of a swoop. the dive obviously gets you the speed to swoop but the ability to control the roll-out and maintane that speed is what lets you go as far or as fast as you do. if you're low or high obviously you're going to go slower or not as far, so having the proper roll-out is crucial to a good swoop. On the Velo the roll-out portion tends to be a little bit longer then the JVX just because of the different platforms, but when done properly on both they'll go nearly identical distances as shown at the last world championships. an easy way to look at the differences in how each canopy reacts in the roll-out is timing them, i've noticed on the Velocity a good time range for a roll-out is 2.5-3, maybe a little more if you're really highly loaded. while on the jvx a 1.5-2 second roll-out is not uncommon for good results. again, this is just my opinion and as we learn more and more about the way these canopies fly things will most likely change. p.s. the roll-out is defined as the exact time when you stop your turn and come on heading until you go through the gates Slip Stream Air Sports Do not go softly, do not go quietly, never back down
  8. I've used the foretrex logger and found the info to be interesting but kind of useless. To better analyze your swoop get tons of video and start timing everything out: double fronts, turn time, roll out, actual swoop time. For example, my best swoops have 4 seconds of double fronts, 7-8 second turn, 2.5 second roll-out (this varies with which canopy i'm flying and WLing). Once you have a good base then when you try different things you'll know what works and what doesn't (change one thing at a time to see what changes what) I've also used a data logger from cypres which was really interesting. Logged 85mph at 300' under a Velocity 90 @ 2.3 WLing, but I didn't get to keep it long enough to really analyze everything. hope that helps...stu Slip Stream Air Sports Do not go softly, do not go quietly, never back down

  11. i agree with Ian, all that was needed for accuracy to make it tougher (if that was the objective) was to switch the point values of water gates 2 and 4, it's simple and doesn't require a lot of change. but I guess as long as the IPC committee gets these new rules out ASAP then it'll be ok since we're all in the same boat and all have the same time to adapt to the new rules. what i would have liked to have seen is a rule stating that there needs to be video on all water gates and also on the zone 0-1 line and the 5-6 line for judging purposes. 15. Personally, I think that there needs to be a consistant means for scoring, meaning we can't have one event be percentage based, another be something else, and then another be yet another way to score. This was the problem a couple years ago when accuracy was NOT based on the percentage system, people could nearly zero all their accuracy rounds but win speed and distance and still place in the top 3. this was mainly due to people just plain sucking at accuracy. a competitor would score 3 rounds totalling 60 points even though they had the highest 3 rounds of the competition, but it couldn't make up the ground that someone who scored 600 points in speed and distance because those events were based off of the percentage system. I think if we make the speed course harder it will spread the scores more. And you might say that it's "counter productive" to growing canopy pilots, however at the national or world levels we're not trying to grow pilots, we're trying to see who the best is. So either make the carve harder, make the course tighter, make the course longer, or all of the above. for CPC style meets then make the course how it is now, and actually that is how it is right now. the "amature" CPC class runs a shorter course that can be done in a straight line. so now we could have an "amature" course, a "pro" level course, and an "elite" level course. competition swooping is an all inclusive sub-discipline of swooping, you can be good at speed and distance but if you suck at accuracy then you're not going to win it's just that simple. and by making accuracy easier or "fluffing" the scores on the speed and distance events we'd only be hurting ourselves. just my thoughts...stu Slip Stream Air Sports Do not go softly, do not go quietly, never back down
  16. The two big flags we used 400's, the rest of the canopies ranged from 170-290 depending on what flag was being jumped. yes, i slapt on a tandem rig for the first time in about 2 years...ohhhh how do i love my sport rig Slip Stream Air Sports Do not go softly, do not go quietly, never back down

  19. Bottom line is we have serious problems here in the US spanning all sorts of issues and we need serious people. McCain is a great candidate but the fact is if he dies while in office, which is very possible, we now have someone who is just an average "joe six pack" and that just doesn't cut it. To be president and vice president you need to be a cut above and Palin with her winking at the camera and "folksy" talk is not that. If McCain had picked anyone else i'd probably go with McCain, but for the good of ourselves, families, and country I cannot go in that direction. And as far as the debat goes, I think the only reason why the general public think Palin might have won is because she didn't fall flat on her face and she did speak well, only thing was she never spoke or answered the question at hand. 23. i want to say it has to do with the patent on the canopy or something to that affect. if people take those off or if they stop building them without the ring then something could be out of wack. but i could be totally wrong. 24. For those looking for quality competition experience in the US these events are great. They give you that added stress of competition but not in a huge competition type setting. A lot of pro level pilots show up to these to use as training tools, and a lot of intermediate/ advanced pilots use these to gain more experience. I'm personally going to try and make a couple of them if i can so hopefully i'll see some of you guys out there. blues...stu p.s. 25. Hey guys, The jump went fantastic, an unbelievable experience to say the least. At 3500' we could hear the city erupt in cheers, we could hear boats sounding their horns, and we could see tons of flashes going off towards the sky. We exited right over the river seperating NY and NJ pretty much over ground zero and it was just an awesome site. It was such an honor to be part of something like this, i will charish this for the rest of my life. i don't know how much the media covered it but below are a few links my mom found with pics. also, i sent kolla a couple of pics to be put up on the PD blog. the pics aren't the best of the best...but you get the point. we took over 1000+ photos and have video so we'll get some more media out there. infact we're putting a youtube video together and we'll also being sending the troops downrange the video as well. thanks to everyone and blue skies...stu the link and an attachment: http://news.yahoo.com/nphotos/Ground-Zero-Sept-11-World-Trade-Center-American-flags-ground-zero/ss/events/us/091102groundzero/im:/080911/480/nyr32409111621/ [url] Slip Stream Air Sports Do not go softly, do not go quietly, never back down
