  1. seems to me that was because he was trying to buy the gun for someone else, not for himself to use... If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  2. I think we understand, Rob. You're chapped at the RCMP. (And the liberal-media, and the lefties, and the gun-haters, and the CBC, and Air Canada, and the CRTC... have I neglected any?) The report doesn't indicate their poor handling in this incident is endemic or systemic. Some of the officers, likely under the direction of overwhelmed command-officers, made mistakes. The RCMP appear to be responding by reinforcing correct procedure/actions while continuing to follow a legal and (inmho) legitimate policy. Personally, I'm more receptive to this approach as opposed to any who would wish the offending officers be publicly flayed in the town square at high noon. Specifically the report does state the disorganization of the collection of guns and how they were physically treated, quoted by the officer who later was placed in charge of them. It was not just one or two officers who were negligent in the way the weapons were handled and or stored, and indeed, it was endemic. I believe it stated that they HAD NO OFFICIAL POLICY on how to handle them, and this is indeed a problem and is endemic. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  3. I never said that. The police need not do anything criminal for someone to get screwed over by the sum-total of behavior, that's kinda the point of my post. And the fact that there would be nothing criminal about it is actually what makes your prospects of trying to get back to where you started so terrible. What's the alternative? I dunno, maybe if police have such a bad record of collecting, documenting, properly storing, and returning firearms to their owners they should just leave them the hell alone. How about that? So your solution is that if due to lawlful police action a firearm is left in plain view and for easy taking, in other words unsafe, the cops should just leave it? I think the current policy when properly implemented makes more sense. If due to lawful police action a firearm is left unsafe, they have a procedure to deal with that. What the cops did was wrong, the policy isn't wrong. what about all the ammunition, none of which was returned? If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. 4. by throwing it in the bottom of their boat and betting it all covered in mud and water on the way to drop it off in a pile on the floor of the garage of their station, with only a small sticky not to say where it came from... 5. The way I read it was as follows: They had a right to "break into" the houses under the emergency search. If that left the firearms in an unlocked area (illegally stored) they would have had the right to remove them. They then needed to go to a judge to to get a warrant for this seazure after the fact. Obviously they never should have started looking for them. This makes sense to me. If through the legal action of the police or others the firearms in these evacuated homes were left in plain site, it makes sense that they take steps to secure them in such a fashion. in plain sight is not necessarily illegally stored. If it's trigger-locked, or had the firing pin removed then even in plain sight it is still not illegally stored and they would have no right to take them. It is not like they took care of them anyways - many were just tossed in the bottom of the boat in the water and mud until they got somewhere they could unload them, and then were piled on the floor of the station with sticky notes one them saying which house they came from. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  6. I don't think he said anywhere that 'all' scientists are greedy frauds. But it only takes a substantial number of them to make a bloc. And again, for many of us, it's not necessarily the 'facts' we disagree with - it's the severity, the, causes, which are not all known or understood, and the reactions and sacrifices that should be required..., If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. 7. I did. Just because it doesn't fit with your view doesn't mean it's not objective (which it is) nor testable (which it also is) nor measurable (which it absolutely is). Show me where extreme weather events of all types around the globe; hurricanes, tornadoes, blizzards, ice packs are neither increasing nor decreasing, etc. are lessening since the industrial revolution, and I'll begin to believe you when you say climate change isn't happening. Until then, you're simply blathering. to begin with, you'll have to define extreme... If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. 8. as far as what I heard on the news, the officer's story did stay the same. Throughout. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  9. source: http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2015/02/12/high-river-gun-seizures_n_6667280.html One thing that stood out in the report is in some rare cases, some officers actually moved weapons into a lockable room in the house, and locked them in, while in other cases officers far exceeded their authority to search drawers, closets, boxes and seize guns which were actually legally stored. There were NO guidelines (that were admitted) from above about a single policy of how to handle it. One thing the report didn't say was - if the house was locked then the guns would be in my mind legally stored even if not trigger-locked (provided they weren't loaded with readily accessible ammo). I am interpreting the locked room as the same as a locked house. It seems to me that it was the police breaking into the home and destroying the lock which left the guns in an illegal sit'n. I looked for some clarification in the report on that but I didn't find it. Hoping for clarification later on this. They also said that if the searchers saw guns and called someone else to come take them away, the second group entering the home were no longer covered under the emergency search provision so the entry to take the guns specifically was an unlawful entry, regardless of the situation of the guns' storage. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  10. I think he hit it. I trust scientists with science. Science is about fact. A scientist says, "if you do this, you get an explosive device. I calculate it as 5 megatons of TNT equivalent."n There is science. A scientist would also say, "I calculate the blast radius of .1 psi over pressure to be 5miles." There is also science The scientist may also say, "humans have no business building and deploying this device, as it is against the nature and will unjustifiably kill people, and all my scientist buddies agree that this must be stopped." Could be the scientists are right, even if for the wrong reasons. Castle Bravo was the code name given to the first United States test of a dry fuel hydrogen bomb, detonated on March 1, 1954, at Bikini Atoll, Marshall Islands, as the first test of Operation Castle. Castle Bravo was the most powerful nuclear device ever detonated by the United States (and just under one-third the energy of the Tsar Bomba, the most powerful device ever detonated), with a yield of 15 megatons of TNT. That yield, far exceeding the expected yield of 4 to 8 megatons (6 Mt predicted), combined with other factors, led to the most significant accidental radioactive contamination ever caused by the United States. Fallout from the detonation—intended to be a secret test—fell on residents of Rongelap and Utirik atolls and spread around the world. The islanders were not evacuated until three days later and suffered radiation sickness. They were returned to the islands three years later but were removed again when their island was found to be unsafe. The crew of the Japanese fishing vessel Daigo Fukuryū Maru ("Lucky Dragon No. 5"), was also contaminated by fallout, killing one crew member. The blast created an international reaction about atmospheric thermonuclear testing. what you said in no way proves the scientists were right. Again, it is opinion. Others have different opinions about it. So you think that irradiating thousands of square miles of the Earth's surface is the right thing to do. Well, I don't, and neither did a lot of scientists. yes, and that would be their opinions. but as has been said, a scientist's job is to determine facts, not to write policy based on his interpretation of those facts. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone

  14. Well, nearly all scientists are saying that man is contributing to global warming, so I guess this means you're ready to accept AGW as the truth. certainly I believe we do contribute to warming. the disconnect is how bit a deal it is and how much should we disrupt our lives and our world now to stop it (if it even can be stopped) If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. 15. so maybe they offer a reduced membership fee - say $25 a year to cover the cost of the mag. 18. in a couple of years, the price of oil goes up, companies starting producing shale oil again. The oil doesn't go away, people just stop developing it until the price goes up enough to make it worthwhile... If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. 19. Actually, think that's exactly what OPEC is doing. again, as I said, they already have the capacity. They're just not artificially holding their oil out of the market in order to keep prices high. When I talk about limiting their competitors, I'm talking about blowing up their pipelines or stealing their techniques/patents without paying for them, etc. I would say that they are simply using the free market the way it is designed to be used - supplying their product at a price others are willing to buy it at, and at which they are still able to make money. The fact that alternative methods of oil production are not as cheap is unfortunate, but for years opec restricted the oil on the market to keep prices up, now their is lots of oil on the market, why shouldn't they sell theirs at a lower price if they can keep or increase market share. Politically we may not like it, but economically it's nothing new. Now, if you can prove that opec is illegally funding politicians or other groups to try to block alternative methods of production (the key there is illegally) then yes, they're cheating, but if they're simply supplying a product at a price they can afford to supply it at, that is a long-standing truth of the free market. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  20. actually, opec isn't artificially mucking with the market at all. they're simply supplying a product that's wanted, and can do so at a cheaper price than some other suppliers. But they have the capacity, it's not like they're trying to limit their competitors production by nefarious means... One might say that when they would reduce production to lower than capacity in order to keep prices high, they are mucking with the market. That makes more sense then saying that producing at capacity to supply a product that is wanted is mucking with it. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. 21. Negative. It means that eventually it all averages out. (yes, pun intended.) When I say all I mean the owner, the waiters, the customers (as a collective group, not as individuals). Only the "cheap skates" would lose out. Everybody else is either net neutral or wins. quite possibly the 'cheapskates' wouldn't lose out - they might just decide to not go to that particular restaurant anymore. so the restaurant loses sales and ends up cutting its workforce - which isn't zero net either... 24. I don't disagree. I have previously stated that I believe training should be required as part of gun ownership and definitely as part of a concealed (or open) carry. Editted to add: The gun lobby is generally not in favour of any of this though. It makes it a bit more difficult to acquire guns, which is something they could never support. A smart gun for instance could have made a difference in this situation. Smart guns tend to be actively resisted. the gun lobby is indeed very in favor of training. they're just not in favor of using a specific very over-priced course as a way of reducing the number of people allowed to carry, for one. And not in favor of requiring training courses to get a licence and then not making available a curriculum or qualified trainers in geographically convenient settings, again being used as a way to prevent people from acquiring mandated training and therefore preventing them from being able to purchase guns, etc... In other words, pretending they allow people to get permits, but in effect, never giving any out, because they don't want to. Sort of like the elusive permit for back-country parachuting you can apply for at yosemite... If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead.
