  1. when someone has called in stating that someones matching their descriptions had 'flashed a gun' then I guess, yeah, they may... If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  2. Sounds more like you don't care if you live, by your own rules. You're OK with dying for lack of a small safety device, and screw anybody who is left to face the consequences. It's not that you want your own rules, it's that you're making what I consider to be a really incomprehensible decision that shows a lack of respect for your own life and the consequences that your death could bring, all so you can feel good about not having a hidden safety device. My own rules include using that little device, it's an intelligent decision. Making my own rules does not include stupid choices. Can we please stop with the suggestion that we should all quit skydiving? I cannot understand how you think giving up the activity completely is the same as installing an AAD. Driving without a seatbelt is real driving. Well, if we have to wear a seatbelt, we'd all be safer not driving anyway! Let's quit driving. I get the feeling that it's all-or-nothing for you, and that "compromise" or "finding a happy medium" are not really options in your world. Seriously, you make using an AAD sound like getting castrated. I wonder how you feel about other safety rules that you think affect only yourself, but actually affect others, too. Edit: I asked my girlfriend, who took AFF but is not an active jumper, about this. We've been all over the world together, skydiving, scuba diving, abseiling, riding in some guy's homemade submarine 600m below the ocean, bungee jumping, etc. She is the adventurous type. My question was what she would think if I decided to jump without an AAD because it thrills me more. She said, "I'd think you're [expletive deleted] stupid, and that you don't care about our life together." Yet she's fine with me skydiving in general. Edit again: She added later, "What am I supposed to tell people at your funeral? That you chose (to be) stupid? Chose (to be) stupid over me?" So it makes sense to you so everyone has to do it. Maybe you should just round up everyone who disagrees with you and give them frontal lobotomies so you can reprogram them to your frame of mind. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  3. Not choosing sides on the debate, but to be fair there have been people with arguments pro and con that have been trying to impose their views on others. first off -- not really sure now who I'm replying to - seems the quotes are all mixed up now. but... I've never seen a post where someone against mandatory aad's has said someone else should not wear one. It's always been that they don't think someone else should be telling them they HAVE to wear one. Or am I wrong on that. So who is saying you can wear one if you want but I won't imposing their view on someone else... If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. 4. I'd say the assholes are the people who expect others to live a certain way to meet expectations. this is correct If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  5. So now we're just making shit up, are we? As for adding seat belts to cars, that or even airbags adds very little relatively to the cost of the car. As Wendy and others have pointed out. There are many people around whose rigs cost the same or even less than an aad. Do you think people would still buy airbags if they added 50% to the price of the car? And many people have multiple rigs. Let's get some perspective here. Oh, and I didn't ask you to feel bad if I went in. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  6. That's what Tom Piras said. Well, in all fairness, I believe Tom merely forgot to turn it on. At least that's what he told Laidlaw, isn't it. Or do you know more about that incident then me? If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  7. Booths Law, no? USPA reports that membership is at an all-time high, and also that fatalities (averaged over each decade) are at an all-time low. Do you think there's a point where this correlation starts to reverse? no. after a fatality, number of students increases because of the publicity. It's well documented If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  8. Soooo, if the fed still does executions, you think that the entire country and its leaders are not part of the civilized world? If the federal government performs an execution (and when it gains death penalty sentences, even against scumbag bombers of children), it does not behave like the civilized world. If Congress repealed any federal death penalty, it would move the federal government closer to the civilized world, and reflect those US citizens who wish to do likewise. Historically, as well as presently, the advancement of a society, or lack of it as the case may be, is more often than not measured in how humane the society is. Or, is not. What about those US citizens that do not wish to do likewise?, and who defines what is 'humane'? If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  9. No its if you stir the pot you will get shit on you. I guess that works for those who live at the bottom of the Mississippi River Sewer that so many millions of people have pissed and shit in from upstream in all those tributaries.. you really mean to insult the millions of people in that geographical area -- just can't help yourself eh? If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  10. good question If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  11. neutral? non-political? do you know anything about conrad black? You think he would ever write anything like that if he hadn't ended up in jail? And he only ended up in jail because he felt he was above the little peoples' laws... Yeah, he probably feels the us justice system is too harsh - because they sent him to jail... If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  12. Where he initially grew up in when to school, yes. Once he moved to Toronto and the neighbourhoods he says he lived in, no. ***But for starters, the guy couldn't even handle the simple question of "so, where are you from?" I didn't get that. WHat I got is that he found he get's asked that question significantly more often than white people get asked that question, based solely on t6eh colour of his skin. Regardless of that, it is indeed but the viewpoint of one person. To me it highlighted how a lot of small things can escalate into a much larger thing. Just look at what is happening on this forum. Many Americans posting here are so tired of little snipes taken at their country that they get very upset. Now imagine that happening in real life, on a personal level. So now you're saying that not only can white people not know what it's like to be black, but he as a black man does know exactly how many times a white person is asked where he's from, and it's much less than how many times he is asked.... I ask white people where they're from all the time. And if I through something out of the car in front of a cop, I wouldn't be surprised to be pulled over for littering. Seems to me the cop was just doing his job during this formative event in young Mr Cole's life. If he walks around imagining what other people see him as, he should be able to imagine what a white cop walks around imagining what the people in their own urban beats see them as. He condones it on one hand, and criticizes it on the other. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. 13. Dale Gates assisted Bill Cole in getting his balloon licence in Canada, letting him use his own balloon (gates') for training, and signing him off. 14. A) I wasn't alive in the 1940s and I'm not a german, so... eh? B) Germans don't care about the WW2 anymore. They're not holding a grudge. It has nothing to do with their motivations for posting any topic. C) If the topic is valid, it's valid, if it's not, it's not and that is independent of the nationality of the person posting it. actually, it seems the germans do care about WW2. I was just reading about a 93 year old accountant from Auschwitz who is going on trial for murdering 300,000 people, and two others, one of whom was a paramedic at the hospital in Auschwitz who had nothing to do with the prisoners, only dealt with german soldiers. he is 92, I believe. The prosecutors were bringing in dozensof witnesses to testify. So your statement would seem to be wrong. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  15. well, february 2014 was the coldest feb on record here, and march 2015 was the coldest march on record. Winter lasted 5 months, starting 3 weeks early, and spring started late. Temps were about 6 degrees celsius below 'normal' whatever that is. So I'm not too worried about global warming. As for your drought, at some point you guys stopped building dams to store water, but your population has continued to increase. Now you're even taking dams out. That isn't going to help... If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  16. If the cop wasn't a mursering piece of suit cocksucker it wouldn't have happened. I guess that child support will remain unpaid, eh? Saying that had the guy not turn and run it wouldn't have happened? That makes me wonder whether the cop told the guy to turn and run. This scene was just cold blooded. The way that cop just calmly planed that taser. Was like he had rehearsed it I'm guessing his kids are set up for life, now. Of course they'll be a law suit. talking about the child support going unpaid is just hyperbolly. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  17. Age *may* be a factor. However, there are skydivers over 80 who jump regularly and are in better physical and cognitive shape than a lot of people under 40. Suitability should be determined on its merits, not an arbitrary chronological factor. I totally agree Kellend. Were he in descent physical condition, I'd have absolutely no problem putting him out. He appears to be pretty mentally sharp. He even, seemingly without much trouble at all, convinced someone at Strong Enterprises to sell him that MC-4 rig. Though I don't know, that may not be much of a hurdle to clear. this was the first thing that struck me. there seems to be a big thing in the base community about not selling rigs to people that have no business base jumping. A big thing about not letting low number jumpers to jump small fast canopies. But nothing about selling a rig to a 78 year old morbidly obese person? If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  18. I will say that a handles check after deployment is more important that freefall. My first tandem cutaway it took some searching before I found that thing - I was starting to get dizzy, for sure! If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. 19. Dude: This is illogical, unpleasant and unfunny in equal measure - not 'skydiverly' at all. To my German friends/skydivers, the families of the victims of this tragedy - including Mr Lubitz's - I'm just sorry for the nonsense spouted by this jackass... I could care less what the fuck you call me. Having a rational discussion with our fellow German posters on here is impossible. Maybe I could have singled out one German-American and not lump the others in. So you tell me... What this guy said in bold in his OP... is that skydiverly? http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?do=post_view_flat;post=4694336;page=1;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;mh=25; It's perfectly acceptable, after all, we are talking about the U.S. If it is Germany and there is an adult that kills people, we should all feel remorse and guilt for him and his family; and not just one bit, all the bits. Right? I do find it funny that Nigel took this opportunity to be outraged about when another poster shows contempt and spite of another's death. Telling, VERRRRRY telling. Sorry dude, you lost me there. But glad you found something funny. For the record: not outraged, just disappointed. I guessed I expected better from jumpers, who can imagine/understand better than Joe Public what a plane crash must be like . . . So you are NOT disappointed in the poster that posted this, "Now, if just all toddlers would kill their gun-addicted parents, we'd have a better, less violent, society !!! I don't feel sorry for the victim. Not one bit!!!" But a guy ragging on a mass murderer you are NOT ok with. I'm not seeing the logic. Actually I'm disppointed by both. Buying a plane ticket doesn't contribute to the pilot's unprofessionalism: this was, until now, effectively unforeseeable to the average passenger. But children killing family members accidentally with a carelessly stored gun is a commonplace occurrence in the US today. So much so the NRA goes to great lengths to educate gun-owners on measures to avoid such a tragedy. I feel very sorry for the trigger-pulling tot, but the parents were obviously stupid and/or careless and contributed to their demise. So it's ironic and tragic. The plane crash is just tragic. actually, to my mind the plane crash is criminal. The company knew about the guy's mental history before he finished training, (he was 'repeatedly' in therapy for depression), and the doctor gave him a note but didn't call through to the company to tell them he shouldn't be flying. Both are liable in my opinion... Unfortunately, I don't think the company will be adequately punished for this. It seems that the three US citizens killed will cost about 1 1/2 million to the insurance companies, but the europeans will only get in the tens of thousands. The whole training thing is a mystery to me - a co-pilot on a major airline with 650 hours? If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. 20. You need to get out more. pot, meet kettle.... If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  21. I think you're wrong, you're looking at it in the wrong way and that's why there's a disagreement. A cop can ask you questions about pretty much anything, he needs cause to hold you and compell an answer. That's where I think you guys are getting fuzzy, the difference between asking and demanding. Wrong You are not required to answer ANY question other than your name A cop can not compell you to answer any other questions That said He sure as hell will try to get an answer and if you say 'that's none of your business', he will probably write in his notes that altho you deny it, he assumes you do, and that you have an attitude If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone

  23. It's starts like this. "In their continued war on women and sexist attitudes the Rebublicans -------------" I was personally thinking it was a vast right-wing conspiracy. Edited to add: woukdnt it be something if the NSA has all the e-mails? they wouldn't let anyone see him. Just ask her for a bigger budget... If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  24. IIRC the state department has actually reported TWICE now that the impact of the pipeline on the environment would be minimal. As far as depressed oil prices, it shows that building the pipeline would lower transportation costs for the oil (while improving safety) and therefore make it easier to live with lower oil prices. One has to remember that much of the pipeline has already been built, so much of capital costs have been invested already. I would love to see the veto over-ridden in house... If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  25. But how many will they also kill? Saving 15 (mass shooting incident) every 5-10 years is nice, but if the overall increase in fatal shootings on campus jumps up by just 5 a year, well, it's kind of a wash or even a negative, isn't it? Wendy P. if it's 5 rapists killed, it's not a wash... If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead.
