  1. wht is the chance I'll need it? If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  2. but if it saved your ass that's a small price to pay. the key phrase in your statement. "IF" it saved your ass. It's a simple cost-benefit analysis. Not 'I will never need...' but rather 'What are the chances, doing the kind of jumping I do that I will need?" Different people will come up with different answers. I'm not anti-aad. If you want one, get one. If the dzo wants you to have one to jump at his dz, he can do that. But they shouldn't be mandated across the board. If the dzo in the next town doesn't require them there, I'll jump there. That said, I'm in agreement that until someone is licenced, they should have one. Once they have a licence they're supposed to be able to decide for themselves how they want to proceed. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  3. cost of a helmet or cost of seatbelt as percentage of vehicle cost, is far less than cost of aad vs rig (expecially used rig). If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. 4. It's not at all arrogance that one won't fuck up. It's obviously a judgement about the cost-benefit analysis of 'what are the odds that I'll need it". and many jumpers will look at the same odds, and decide differently whether the cost-benefit analysis makes them decide to buy one or not. Being a dzo may indeed skew the analysis in Tom's case, or maybe not. For you're other point, it is quite possible that a lot of people over the years HAVE INDEED stopped jumping because the choice to use rounds, or capewells, or leg strap pcs was removed. How would you know? And many people may have thought about coming back and using their old gear, seen the price of new gear and decided not to. Point being, it is a dzo's right to require an aad on his dz. It is a jumper's right to decide not to jump there.... If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. 5. I'm not sure anyone will make money off the change. That's an angle I've never heard discussed. seems to me it would sure cost someone some money! If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  6. from what I hear, he was shot because he was charging at the cop. not walking away... If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  7. you can watch the same newscast I watch and NOT see an us vs them situation>? If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  8. How old school of you.... how many of those will be standing forward for TO? at arthur they painted a black line inside the fuselage - to indicate that if your ass was behind the line during a problem takeoff - you have to throw yourself out the door to save the rest of the load.... If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  9. It would be great if you could post some of the pictures somewhere, and maybe scan or copy the article and post it here or somewhere else, and give us a link. It is important to get these things on the record before they are forgotten... If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. 10. Bob Wright at Grand Bend Sport Parachute Centre in Ontario has a roll-up door on his 206. You could try contacting him, just google grand bend skydiving. There are some videos and pics of jumping on facebook, but not really focused on the door. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. 12. I am not philosophically opposed to capital punishment. Neither, I believe, is Kozinski. But I think he nails this. Maybe not his business writing a political discourse, but I think he said what needs to be said. What do you expect from someone on the 9th? This country hasn't had the stomach for the reality of capital punishment for over a hundred years. It's hard to believe they thought the chair was more humane than the gallows or the firing squad. It's not going to change now. I would even carry it further and say that all executions should be made available for public viewing, at least televise them. If we are going to execute in the name of the state, the state should be able to see the end result of the process. From what I've read, executions are very had on prison staff, they say you never execute the same man who committed the crime, especially when it's ten years later. I think the needle is used more for the benefit of the staff, than the benefit of the condemned. I'll have a large popcorn and a diet coke, please. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  13. I don't know what the facts are no one here knows. ok So what you are saying if a student on a tandem gets injured/and or the TI the TI should have his ratings pulled! And yes it is the same thing. depends if the TI was using best or accepted industry practices. If he was, and the student was injured, that's one thing. But if he was coming into the landing downwind, or hits an object he shouldn't have been anywhere near, and that is what injures the student, then yes, he should (and some have, at least) had his rating pulled... If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  14. There is no reason to believe that Australia has fewer mentally ill people (per capita) than the USA, yet Oz hasn't had a mass shooting since 1996, when they tightened the gun laws there. Childers Palace Fire - In June 2000, drifter and con-artist Robert Long started a fire at the Childers Palace backpackers hostel that killed 15 people. Monash University shooting - In October 2002, Huan Yun Xiang, a student, shot his classmates and teacher, killing two and injuring five. Churchill Fire - 10 confirmed deaths due to a deliberately lit fire. The fire was lit on 7th of February 2009.[6] Quakers Hill Nursing Home Fire - 10 confirmed and as many as 21 people may have died as a result of a deliberately lit fire in a Quakers Hill nursing home. The fire was lit early on 18th of November 2011.[7] If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. 15. At the College of Teachers, if there's a disciplinary investigation it is published in the magazine and on the website along with the findings and an explanation of the action (or inaction) that results. And this is not just for severe infractions. In cases where discipline is found appropriate the name is usually published along with revocation notice or other actions required, such as anger management course, classroom management course, etc. In some minor cases and in cases where it is decided no action is necessary, the names are sometimes left out. But the findings and reasoning of the result are still published. Why shouldn't uspa do the same? If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. 16. investigations found this was an unfortunate anomaly and not some despicable pattern of endangering the public and doing irreparable damage to the sport as a whole? With all respect, it seems there was a certain organizer who at several different times seemed to be violating certain safety rules. Looks like he was never really made to account for his actions. And then one day he flew into Bob Holler and killed them both. People at the forefront of the sport do need to be accountable for their actions, and the people they represent need the facts to decide whether they have been. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  17. Right now, it's on a "need to know" basis, and I reckon right now you just don't need to know. Respectfully. Th best judge of future behavior is past behavior. And past behavior tells us we will never know what happened here... If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. 19. I knew someone who was being harassed by 'suspected only' someone who used to work with them (he'd been let go for unrelated reasons). This went on for several months. When it advanced to the point of an anonymous note being sent through the mail to her physical address (which the person had no reason to know), two 'security men' from work visited the 'suspect's' home to convince him it was in his best interests to cease any such behaviors, if he had indeed been responsible for them in the first place. That seemed to do the trick. However, this is a unique case in that both people had worked for the company in question, and one still did. I think every case would be different. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  20. I'm curious why they did this, are there certain situations where he would go for reserve instead of main and then be able to cut away the main. I would assume he would always go for main first, and I'm unsure of the rationale behind a reserve cutaway. My wild-ass guess is that a premature deployment of the reserve at over 100,000 feet would have been very bad and need to be cutaway. That is absolutely the correct scenario. The life support is good for the 5 minute freefall, but not a 60 minute canopy ride.
  21. I would say you're wrong on the American psyche being the problem. Every country has their nutbags that should not get their hands on a gun. Wasn't there a mass murder somewhere in Norway a few years back where one guy went bonkers? What we have is a mental illness problem, and it's a world-wide problem. I believe there was one in belgium this week... If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. 22. yeah, because when one of those bears around here comes and tries to pull the window frame out of my house and come inside, the last thing I would want to be able to access is my hunting rifle... 23. +1 The bloodlust is strong in many places still. It usually seems to be strongest in places with those who claim to follow Christ the most. Interesting comment. so muslim countries where women can be stoned to death for being raped get a pass? If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. 24. My guess is that he's mimicking some of the right-wingers who rush to post based on an article they don't read well enough to make a bullshit point they're strongly predisposed to believing. I have little doubt of this. But didn't your mother tell you "two wrongs don't make a right?" I'd like to see such posts deleted as trolling. And mods should set the example. You call him a mod? In name only, maybe If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  25. When the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, The American Association for the Advancement of Science, and 97% of climate scientists say the science is settled, it's fair to say that the science is settled. when a majority of the citizens and politicians say that slavery is an acceptable practice, it's fair to say that slavery is an acceptable practice...
