  1. Chuteless passed away last xmas day... If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  2. You mentioned your grandmother also jumped. What was her name? And do you have any articles or pictures you could scan of your grandparents? That would be great If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  3. just reading the post about FAA's medical reforms, and it made me wonder - what are the rules about ti's and dui's. Not being from the US I'm not familiar with FAA medicals TI's had to do there, but I understand that if you have a dui you may lose your medical, and thus your rating? For how long? Can you get it back? If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  4. This seems right to me. You could, though, make a pretty fair argument that killing any sort of animals for sport is wrong. Yet the sailfish remains on my wall.... and yet in china dogs are killed for a very good reason -- people eat them... If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. 6. they're asking about tandem jumps. I was on Bob's 14000 jump a couple years back, and he may have close to 10000 pff jumps, but I doubt he's done a tandem ever... 8. Yup, it's a crazy system you have down there. Single payer baby, it's the way to go. That is, if you want your healthcare system to be about...say....healthcare. If you want it to be mostly about insurance company profits, well, keep going down the road you're on. right. If you want to wait for treatment until there's no point in waiting for treatment. Or if, as in my mother's case, you want to take an ambulance to the hospital when it decides it should divert and pick up a second patient in order to save money. Too bad if my mother had a fatal heart attack on the way to the hospital after they picked up the second person... That's health care in Canada - no where near as good as people claim If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. 9. Because you are the OP of the thread. Nothing you wrote was quoted, which is what I would do if I were responding directly to something you wrote. Just because this cop couldn't shoot straight doesn't mean another good guy with a gun couldn't... Many Americans are vets, many are hunters... 10. 'doubt' the suit will be successful is not the same thing as the 'the suit will not be successful'... Secondly, the prosecutor was out of line, and perhaps a lawsuit, even if unsuccessful, will cause her to think about her actions in future. It may also have the effect of causing people in her area to wonder about her suitability when her term is up... If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. 11. last time I checked, many places have laws against riding a bike on the sidewalk. The kid here is at fault. He got in her face, was going to ride away. Wrong move. 12. can you still edit posts? used to be you got a chance to edit beside the quote/reply button, I thought. I spelled someone's name wrong and can't figure out how to change it now... 13. how do you know db wasn't a skydiver and didn't make a lot more jumps? If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  14. I would give you Gary Connelly, based on his Olympic performance with James Bond and his wingsuit landing on a bed of boxes, but Pastrana is not famous for parachuting, he's famous for Nitro Circus or whatever his show is. I've heard of Eric Ronner, but not sure where. I don't know that Jeb Corliss is famous to those outside of skydiving/base jumping community, although I guess he was in the remake of Point Break. I might tend to think more along the lines of Shane McConkey, but even he I'm not sure of. Maybe Felix Baumgartner based on his red bull altitude record. 15. I've seen people told to come back another day for drinking. And I've seen people given refunds when they weren't able to jump after several attempts - they may have had to argue for that, though. I don't know that I've ever seen anyone that absolutely COULDN'T perform during the training, but then again, procedures are a bit easier these days. So I don't think I've ever seen anyone told they couldn't do a 1st jump for that reason. And if it's a tandem they're doing, it's more up to the instructor anyways. If the instructor is really negligent, I think there would be a lawsuit anyways, despite whether the person was told it was safe or not. I have seen people to told to leave during their student status after underperforming on several jumps. I still have no problem at all with positive press in the media... 16. Oh Okay. We should just tell them we can't breathe in freefall too. I guess the more mis-information the better huh. unless they're just buying a rig and teaching themselves - it's the school's, and the instructors', job. You are right, they should just fly like Superman, do at least 5 minutes of freefall from 8 grand like in the movies, and wait for the AAD to DEPLOY their parachutes. Why bother with 2 parachutes and pilot chutes, its just away for the gear companies to make more money telling you need 2. Skydiving is super safe. Its all just information. I doubt any dropzones will turn away prospective students who call after reading the article. And when they come out to be trained, they'll sign the waivers and be told of the dangers... 17. Such a strategy will have to wait until someone invents a vehicle capable of being driven on non-paved surfaces. In many places people are discouraged from WALKING off established trails due to the damage they inflict on the environment - and you suggest that 4 wd vehicles hauling loads won't? 20. It is the responsibility of the skydive school teaching a student to impress upon them the dangers implicit in skydiving, and get them to sign a waiver agreeing to such. It isn't the responsibility of the Wall Street Journal, or the author... If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. 21. And you know very little about what you type. I am not any expert but I did spend 30 yrs working in the large electrical transmission business. And my agency was heavily involved in a number of nuclear plants. I think only one is still operational. Any idea on just what the total costs of cleaning up a shutdown nuclear plant are? Jerry Baumchen that would be one good reason to re-furbish them and continue using them, wouldn't it? or is that not an option? If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. 22. Why are you so pessimistic? I can see solar providing 100% within 60 years. If Saudi Arabia covered a substantial part of their desert with PV they could use the power to make synthetic liquid fuels. It's only a question of EROEI. As long a that is positive it's doable. so you greenies are perfectly ok with destroying all that habitat for desert-dwelling creatures in one fell swoop? 24. OTOH, Squeaky Fromme tried to kill then-president Ford. But she wasn't prosecuted for the Tate/LaBianca killings. Well, it's my understanding squeaky fromme didn't have anything to do with the tate/labianca killings. from wiki: She was never charged with involvement in the murders, but was convicted of attempting to prevent Manson's imprisoned followers from testifying, as well as contempt of court when she herself refused to testify. She was given short jail sentences for both offenses.[3] Interestingly enuf, in 1972 in Stockton squeaky was staying with 4 others in a house when they were arrested for the murders of another couple. Squeaky was held for 2 1/2 months and then released, the others were convicted... Fromme moved to Stockton, California, with Family member Nancy Pitman and a friend named Priscilla Cooper, and a pair of ex-convict Aryan Brotherhood members named Michael Monfort and James Craig. This group happened to meet up with a couple, James and Lauren Willett, at a cabin. The ex-convicts forced James Willett to dig his own grave and gunned him down because he was going to tell the authorities about a series of robberies that the ex-convicts had committed after they were released from prison.[6] After the body of James Willett was found, with his hand still sticking out of the ground,[6] the housemates were taken into custody on suspicion of murder. After their arrest, the body of Lauren Willett was discovered as well.[6] An infant girl believed to be the Willetts' daughter was also found in the house in Stockton, and placed in Mary Graham Hall, a shelter for children in French Camp, California.[6] Fromme was released for lack of evidence.[3] squeaky claimed she had just come to visit.
