It is .6 from the parking lot to the top. We did two waterfall hikes before heading over to Brasstown Bald. Yes, the observation center is open now. They have a lot of old artifacts and displays up there. They do NOT have water up there, so be sure to bring some. They even have a shuttle for $2 that will take you to the top!
