    covid-19

COVID-19 is too convenient an excuse for a generation of people to just punt. We don’t do this. We are Americans. In the Spanish flu, ’17, ’18, ’19, 1917, much death. Do you know that there was not one mention of it by the president of the United States at the time, Woodrow Wilson? Never talked about it. There was no national policy to deal with it. There was no shutdown. There was just, “Hey, go outside, get some fresh air, stand in the sun as long as you can, get some vitamin D, feel better.” It had numerous waves to it. It coincided with World War I, which is what Woodrow Wilson’s concern was. Soldiers going off to war arguably spread one of the waves. But there was no “woe is us.” It was just the next in a long line of things that happened to people that they dealt with, like the Donner party. You’ve heard of the Donner party. Maybe some of you haven’t. The Donner party, the Donner family and a bunch of travelers trying to get to California over the Sierra Nevada mountain range. They made the mistake of trying to make the trip in the middle of winter. We’re talking the Lake Tahoe region. They get to the peak. It was so bad that they had to turn to cannibalism to survive. That’s what’s noteworthy about the Donner party. If you read the diaries written by the leaders of the Donner party, the only reference to how cold it was was one sentence: “It was a particularly tough winter.” It’s just what was. They didn’t complain about it because there was nothing they could do. They had to adapt. This is what’s missing. There seems to be no concept of adaptation. There seems to be no understanding in the Millennial generation that we can adapt to this and that we’re gonna have to. Because there’s nothing stopping it right now. -- Rush Limbaugh Source: https://www.rushlimbaugh.com/daily/2020/07/14/were-not-acting-at-all-like-americans-in-this-pandemic/ That's right, folks; Nothing we could have done about it. All the advancements in medical science over the last century, just didn't happen. (Oh, and the "no shutdowns" is a flat out lie.)
  3. Well, the accused claims it was an accident. Just another example of someone too stupid to possess a gun, even if he is a cop. https://www.kiro7.com/news/trending/cop-who-threatened-kill-protesters-shoots-kills-colleague-who-knocked-door-affidavit-says/BMAXC27P7FA7LMIAXFQUJAHZJE/

The mention of Heaven's Gate in the article reminds me of a comment that circulated afterward, and is still relevant today: "So many idiots, so few comets."

FYI: Boulder CO is currently requiring masks on all employees and customers of businesses open to the public. Boulder CO still does not require women to cover their breasts.
  9. Some interesting trivia. It is autobiographical, and the although he never saw her again, she wrote to him after the movie came out. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Summer_of_'42#Factual_basis He never saw her again; his last "encounter" with her, recounted on an episode of The Mike Douglas Show, came after the film's release in 1971, when she was one of over a dozen women who wrote letters to Raucher claiming to be "his" Dorothy. Raucher recognized the "real" Dorothy's handwriting, and she confirmed her identity by making references to certain events only she could have known about. She told Raucher that she had lived for years with the guilt that she had potentially traumatized him and ruined his life. She told Raucher that she was glad he turned out all right, and that they had best not re-visit the past. If only some older woman would have "traumatized" me at that age...
  10. I was wondering why Stone got a commutation instead of a pardon. And here it is: It is interesting that Trump did not pardon Stone, but rather commuted his sentence. A presidential pardon takes away a person’s right to stay silent in court under the right established by the Fifth Amendment to the Constitution not to self-incriminate. It does so because there is no need to worry about conviction: you've been pardoned. A commutation does not take away that right, so Stone now cannot be compelled to testify. 11. CGPGrey added another video to his series on the EC:
  12. First, banning by IP does not account for Network Address Translation. When I worked for Fortune 500 companies, we had thousands of users behind a single public IP. Second, "machine ID", aka MAC address, does not work unless server and client are on the same network. The MAC address does not go beyond the first router. Usable methods of identification are the variables passed from browser to server when first establishing an HTTP(S) connection.
  13. "Coordinated state elections"? No. Not even that. United States Constitution, Article Two, Section 1, Clause 2: Each State shall appoint, in such Manner as the Legislature thereof may direct, a Number of Electors, equal to the whole Number of Senators and Representatives to which the State may be entitled in the Congress: but no Senator or Representative, or Person holding an Office of Trust or Profit under the United States, shall be appointed an Elector. It says nothing about the state holding an election. The manner of choosing electors is entirely up to whatever the state legislature decides. If the legislature enacted a law stating that the legislators themselves would choose the electors, the Constitution would not prohibit it. There is nothing in the Constitution requiring citizens to have any input at all in choosing POTUS.

Well, if they wouldn't have gotten tested, this wouldn't have happened, right?
  16. More to the point: Trolls must troll.
  17. As Yale Law Professor Akhil Amar states in his lecture series (on Youtube): The EC electors are "potted plants" who are not supposed do any thinking, but just do as they are told.

For sure! I even heard a radio interview with a medical professional who stated they have found detectable lung damage in asymptomatic people.
  20. https://www.cpr.org/2020/07/06/supreme-court-unanimously-sides-with-colorado-washington-in-faithless-electors-case/ Now we can stop pretending that the EC is supposedly a group of wise elders who can over-rule a bad popular choice. (As if the 2016 election wasn't already proof).
