This morning on another forum, some moron arguing against masks claimed that in workplaces that employ medical professionals, the building ventilation systems add additional O2 to compensate for mask usage. He was promptly refuted by everyone with a clue. Prior to college, I spent 7 years working in the building maintenance dept of a hospital, and we certainly did not add O2 via the HVAC systems.

A Stars & Stripes reprint of a WaPo article: https://www.stripes.com/news/us/superspreading-events-triggered-by-people-who-may-be-asymptomatic-propel-virus-pandemic-1.638034 Interesting that they are beginning to believe that a small minority of infected people ("super-emitters") are responsible for the vast majority of the transmissions. In a detailed analysis of outbreaks in Hong Kong, for example, researchers found three distinct groups of incidents. The superspreading individuals, representing 20% of the total, were responsible for 80% of transmissions. A second group, involving about 10% of cases, transmitted the virus to one or two others. The final group, 70%, did not infect anyone else at all.
  5. This is a WaPo article reprinted by Stars & Stripes. Apparently, this one guy has been trolling the right wing for years, and even getting them to show up armed to confront AntiFa at non-existent events. Fake flag burning at Gettysburg was only the latest hoax by a Pennsylvania man: https://www.stripes.com/news/us/fake-flag-burning-at-gettysburg-was-only-the-latest-hoax-by-a-pennsylvania-man-1.637904 The original paywalled WaPo source: https://www.washingtonpost.com/investigations/2020/07/17/gettysburg-antifa-flag-burning-troll/
  6. An LEO is entitled to pursue escaping perps. A civilian has no such right. The right to claim self-defense ends once the attack ends, i.e. the moment they turn to leave.
  7. Now, Trump and his people have gone all-in on dividing the country, both to hold his base and to frighten his opponents with fascist tactics. The administration has sent federal agents in battle gear to Portland, Oregon, in what it says is an attempt to protect federal property. But the complaints against the protesters are embarrassing. Yesterday Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Chad Wolf released a press release warning the American people just how dangerous the “violent anarchists” in Portland are. His list includes 17 counts of graffitiing a courthouse, damaging fences, “throwing animal seed” (what does this even mean?), vandalizing two security cameras, breaking windows, and throwing fireworks. For these acts, unidentified officers in unmarked cars are pulling people off the streets. The officers appear to be from Customs and Border Protection, and a memo obtained by The Nation says they are a special task force created by the Department of Homeland Security in response to Trump’s Executive Order on Protecting American Monuments, Memorials, and Statues and Combating Recent Criminal Violence. The task force is called the Protecting American Communities Task Force (PACT), and is supposed to combat civic unrest. Source: https://www.facebook.com/heathercoxrichardson/posts/2352935854850467

  10. DoD effectively bans Confederate flags from military installations https://taskandpurpose.com/news/pentagon-bans-confederate-flag They didn't specifically prohibit it; They just listed which flags are approved, and "flags of rebellion against the country" didn't make the list.

    covid-19

COVID-19 is too convenient an excuse for a generation of people to just punt. We don’t do this. We are Americans. In the Spanish flu, ’17, ’18, ’19, 1917, much death. Do you know that there was not one mention of it by the president of the United States at the time, Woodrow Wilson? Never talked about it. There was no national policy to deal with it. There was no shutdown. There was just, “Hey, go outside, get some fresh air, stand in the sun as long as you can, get some vitamin D, feel better.” It had numerous waves to it. It coincided with World War I, which is what Woodrow Wilson’s concern was. Soldiers going off to war arguably spread one of the waves. But there was no “woe is us.” It was just the next in a long line of things that happened to people that they dealt with, like the Donner party. You’ve heard of the Donner party. Maybe some of you haven’t. The Donner party, the Donner family and a bunch of travelers trying to get to California over the Sierra Nevada mountain range. They made the mistake of trying to make the trip in the middle of winter. We’re talking the Lake Tahoe region. They get to the peak. It was so bad that they had to turn to cannibalism to survive. That’s what’s noteworthy about the Donner party. If you read the diaries written by the leaders of the Donner party, the only reference to how cold it was was one sentence: “It was a particularly tough winter.” It’s just what was. They didn’t complain about it because there was nothing they could do. They had to adapt. This is what’s missing. There seems to be no concept of adaptation. There seems to be no understanding in the Millennial generation that we can adapt to this and that we’re gonna have to. Because there’s nothing stopping it right now. -- Rush Limbaugh Source: https://www.rushlimbaugh.com/daily/2020/07/14/were-not-acting-at-all-like-americans-in-this-pandemic/ That's right, folks; Nothing we could have done about it. All the advancements in medical science over the last century, just didn't happen. (Oh, and the "no shutdowns" is a flat out lie.)

The mention of Heaven's Gate in the article reminds me of a comment that circulated afterward, and is still relevant today: "So many idiots, so few comets."
