  1. thanks for all of the advice guys...sounds like it is probably a bad idea, I just need to learn a hell of a lot more about all of this...every jump, I learn a little more, eventually I might actually have a clue what the hell I'm doing. Airtwardo:"There is a bit of difference between a rigger with a nipper and a guy with 138 jumps and a swiss army knife...usually!"
  2. it is fun, and I have stopped beating myself up over my slow progress...its all good! Airtwardo:"There is a bit of difference between a rigger with a nipper and a guy with 138 jumps and a swiss army knife...usually!"
  3. thanks, bro...appreciate the input. It is almost certainly my lack of experience. Others have had good landings with this same rig, I am just green as grass and wondering if I should try doing stuff I have seen others do...I'll figure this stuff out eventually! Airtwardo:"There is a bit of difference between a rigger with a nipper and a guy with 138 jumps and a swiss army knife...usually!"
  4. reasonable and logical answer... gracias. Airtwardo:"There is a bit of difference between a rigger with a nipper and a guy with 138 jumps and a swiss army knife...usually!"
  5. I am flying a big, puffy, floaty student canopy, gentle and forgiving, and thats fine, except it doesnt flare for shit...I can't even get close to a stand-up landing... In this case would there be a huge problem with grabbing a wrap or 2 on the brake lines so I can get a bit more ass on the flare? I have tried flaring early, slowly, fast and low, and every thing in between...its a 288 Manta... they brag about being imposssible to stall, but Im tired of sliding in on my butt. I must say tho, my PLF is looking great! Airtwardo:"There is a bit of difference between a rigger with a nipper and a guy with 138 jumps and a swiss army knife...usually!"
  6. that is AWESOME! 48 jumps...There may be hope for me yet! Airtwardo:"There is a bit of difference between a rigger with a nipper and a guy with 138 jumps and a swiss army knife...usually!"
  7. LOL! "Domestic flights in the States are dirt cheap, " ...I'm actually considering taking a damn Greyhound bus. I can sleep on the bus, the fare would be about the same as gas money for the drive, and I can always use the time to catch up on my reading, but it's a 15 hour bus ride - 15 hours, on a BUS! might be worth it, tho. edit; hang on! the tunnel time is $1100 US per hour??? Holy crap! does that come with champagne, caviar, Cuban cigars, and hookers? edit again...OK, did the math, not so outrageous after all, unless they make you buy a whole hour? cuz that would be pretty ridiculous... Airtwardo:"There is a bit of difference between a rigger with a nipper and a guy with 138 jumps and a swiss army knife...usually!"
  8. just a basic lack of stability, spinning and wobbling a bit, and not getting a good heading - I tend to do too much sight-seeing, looking at the scenery instead of focusing on the job at hand. "Ooohh, pretty!" isn't really helpful. I'll figure it out eventually, but I've been kicking myself for not making faster progress. I just need to relax and enjoy the journey, I guess Airtwardo:"There is a bit of difference between a rigger with a nipper and a guy with 138 jumps and a swiss army knife...usually!"
  9. that is an EXCELLENT way of looking at it...thanks. I've been beating myself up for 2 weeks now - maybe I should ease up a bit. OTOH, I really would like some tunnel time. I bet its a buttload of fun, and would really help me settle down in freefall. Airtwardo:"There is a bit of difference between a rigger with a nipper and a guy with 138 jumps and a swiss army knife...usually!"
  10. as far as I can tell from my research into the subject, I am geographically as far away from a wind tunnel as is possible to be, while still residing in the Continental US...and if anybody could really use some tunnel time, it's ME, cuz I can't fly worth a shit... Airtwardo:"There is a bit of difference between a rigger with a nipper and a guy with 138 jumps and a swiss army knife...usually!"
  11. I would kill for some tunnel time...the nearest tunnel is 600 miles away, and these pesky kids insist on food, clothing, and a roof over their heads, dammit! If there was any way I could take a weekend and just go, I would. Airtwardo:"There is a bit of difference between a rigger with a nipper and a guy with 138 jumps and a swiss army knife...usually!"
  12. That's not a skydiving movie. Neither is this "Breakaway" Cutaway isn't "not too terrible", it's exceptionally bad. no, its not...it appears to be a ripoff of Die Hard...glad I didn't order it. Airtwardo:"There is a bit of difference between a rigger with a nipper and a guy with 138 jumps and a swiss army knife...usually!"
  13. I'm a new guy, I weigh 222, I have a bad back and a bum knee...I have 8 landings, 7 sliding in on my butt, and one PLF just like they show in the books - no damage...don't worry about the weight, just concentrate on relaxing and getting a good PELVIC arch...DO NOT ARCH WITH YOUR CHEST LIKE SUPERMAN. Arch with your hips, like you are trying to put your zipper on the ground. relax, have fun, and listen to your instructors. yer gonna do great! Airtwardo:"There is a bit of difference between a rigger with a nipper and a guy with 138 jumps and a swiss army knife...usually!"
  14. Charlie Sheen, Russian mob, KGB, skydiving...sounds like some, drunken, brainless fun! Airtwardo:"There is a bit of difference between a rigger with a nipper and a guy with 138 jumps and a swiss army knife...usually!"
  15. this one... http://www.amazon.com/Breakaway-Dean-Cain/dp/B000093W4T/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1346500389&sr=8-13&keywords=breakaway Airtwardo:"There is a bit of difference between a rigger with a nipper and a guy with 138 jumps and a swiss army knife...usually!"
  16. I saw Point Break a few years ago, and I've seen Dropzone about a dozen times (funny as all hell - I love to watch them throw Leedy out of the plane!), but thats about all I've seen...any suggestions for movies with lots of wind? Movies that don't totally suck balls, I mean. I've heard a rumor that Breakaway was actually not too terrible... Airtwardo:"There is a bit of difference between a rigger with a nipper and a guy with 138 jumps and a swiss army knife...usually!"
  17. we actually talked about that. good idea, we will probably do that... Airtwardo:"There is a bit of difference between a rigger with a nipper and a guy with 138 jumps and a swiss army knife...usually!"
  18. well, finishing AFF would probably be a good thing. I am a Total FNG, so I have a lot to learn. Airtwardo:"There is a bit of difference between a rigger with a nipper and a guy with 138 jumps and a swiss army knife...usually!"
  19. that does sound like alot of fun...maybe next summer when I have some basic skills figured out. Thanks! Airtwardo:"There is a bit of difference between a rigger with a nipper and a guy with 138 jumps and a swiss army knife...usually!"
  20. what exactly is a 4 way scramble? I know what a 4 way is, but what is the scramble part? Airtwardo:"There is a bit of difference between a rigger with a nipper and a guy with 138 jumps and a swiss army knife...usually!"
  21. sounds like solid advice... thanks! Airtwardo:"There is a bit of difference between a rigger with a nipper and a guy with 138 jumps and a swiss army knife...usually!"
  22. actually, I have a bum left knee, missing some cartilage in there. Something to think about. thanks... edit...now that I think about it, bum knee, stiff hip on that same side, spinal mis-alignment, dislocated shoulder, screwed-up neck...I'm a freakin walking laundry list of partially functional body parts. Maybe all of the old injuries will balance each other out. Airtwardo:"There is a bit of difference between a rigger with a nipper and a guy with 138 jumps and a swiss army knife...usually!"
  23. was doing harness inputs all day sunday... the effect was not drastic, but was very noticeable...I was doing rear riser turns, rear riser stalls, and harness inputs, and it was all noticeable and all helpful. I actually felt better and more coordinated using harness inputs for my turns and corrections on final, and seemed to be in better control of my canopy the whole time...thanks for the advice...BTW, I was *very* conservative with all of my new techniques, especially the front riser dives...just enough input to see what it was like... Airtwardo:"There is a bit of difference between a rigger with a nipper and a guy with 138 jumps and a swiss army knife...usually!"
  24. take me at my word here... the "smart guy" problem is gone. I am well aquainted with the taste of humble pie... Airtwardo:"There is a bit of difference between a rigger with a nipper and a guy with 138 jumps and a swiss army knife...usually!"
  25. stumbled and fumbled my way thru AFF3... I thought I was nice and neutral, stable and straight - maybe not. I appear to spin to the left a bit, and it doesn't help when you correct a left spin by turning left! Oops...It would help a bunch if I would stop enjoying the scenery and actually pick a heading out towards the horizon. I spend too much time looking at the ground..."Oh cool, look at the cows! And that's a nice house over there, he needs to put a pistol range in the south 40, that would be neat..." Learned a lot this weekend, including how nice it is landing in a nice grassy pasture - so soft and cushiony, like Charmin! LOL! Determination and desire will only take me so far, eventually, I'm gonna need to pull my head outta my ass... Airtwardo:"There is a bit of difference between a rigger with a nipper and a guy with 138 jumps and a swiss army knife...usually!"
