leewilcox 0 #1 December 20, 2010 http://www.russia-ic.com/news/show/11260/ Russian engineers are working on an individual flying vehicle, which users will need no parachute. New flying vehicle looks like a Batman suit. Its main idea is a wingsuit, widely used in sky-diving, which is a jumpsuit with textile webs between extremities. Ordinary wingsuit doesn’t provide landing, because it cannot be used insdead of a parachute. New development of Russian engineers boasts larger webs for improved stability and safe landing. Landing will be based upon “cushion” effect, common for landings with parachutes of “wing” type. Engineers are currently calculating optimum parameters for the suit and will soon start testing a full-scale model of the suit in a wind channel."Nothing exists except atoms and empty space; everything else is opinion" - Democritus

Costyn 1 #8 December 21, 2010 I posted this to wingsuitnews.com too. If you click the link to Science News in the summary (which is what it is), you get a longer article in Russian: http://translate.google.com/translate?js=n&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&layout=2&eotf=1&sl=ru&tl=en&u=http://nauka.izvestia.ru/news/article104553.html Unfortunately the article is light on details... but makes a fun read. birdynamnam 28 #9 December 21, 2010 If any engineers can do this, it have to be the russians, think of all the strange flying machines they have created over the years... http://englishrussia.com/images/flying_fortress/1.jpg

But yea..many weird flying contraptions did fly (or where in development) especially the whole 'flying body' program (also from the US) is quite cool. Though almost all programs share the fact that 'landing' was the only thing they didnt really do all that well..JC FlyLikeBrick I'm an Athlete?

birdynamnam 28 #14 December 22, 2010 sorry for the thread drift, but it is simply too funny, the comments on the french design: "After it crashed, Lebouge, facing a firing squad, said defiantly, "We are lovers, not engineers!"" http://discaircraft.greyfalcon.us/Major%20Howdy%20Bixby.htm
aarthus 0 #15 December 23, 2010 Looks like the Ekranoplane pic you posted is the model Bartini Beriev VVA 14....should have wings on top of it... http://www.testpilot.ru/russia/bartini/vva/vva_e.htm http://www.darkroastedblend.com/2009/06/ekranoplans-showcase-part-2.htmlPatrick de Guillebon
birdynamnam 28 #16 December 23, 2010 I know, but that was not the point, the point was really just how weird it looked, even w/o wings :) And... you forgot the most important thing : to comment /get back on me - on the "we are lovers, not engineers" Maybe Zun would like to have that as his signature?
