World BASE Race 2010

Recommended Posts

All top 8 had Vampire 3 and 7 of them had Hybrid rig.

All times below 19:00 was with Hybrid. Ronny who fly very consistent, changed his rig to Hybrid and did personal best at 18.69

That was quite interesting to see, and all his times at Hellesylt was also very consistent around the same numbers.

I would love to see more different suits next year, and there is some proto types we did not allow this year, which maybe comes next year. Tony suits do not have any racers attending Norway, but there was one in Swiss last year, and I am sure they will come next year. Maybe an idea to ask Tony to support his fastest flyers to get over here?

We will have new rule about "proven cutaway system for wings. I understand Tony suit do not have that, but have sleeves. I would like to hear your experiences about the sleeves, and if any of you had any problems with them.

This is a cross post from another forum as well the types of the different suits present at WBR

What's your interpretation of substantially (by more than 1s!) shorter times compared to last year? Was anything different this year in distance or time measurement method?

If not, do you attribute the difference to better skill of pilots (but same technique in general, in terms of trajectory), better suits, different technique? If the latter, how was the technique different? (longer dive down, stronger slingshot effect? or the opposite?)

To the outside world, it just sounds like a report from some olympic games where several athletes just ran 100m in under 9s... hence, the healthy curiosity - "how come?" ;)

First of all I guess the jumpers have trained a bit more specific for the race in mind (even they do not want to admit) There was some attitude change this year, and a bit more focused about flying fast, and not showing up for fun. Also 20 jumpers got excellent time to practice at Hellesylt before the event at Innfjorden. Exit technique have improved, so have also their flying. You could hear less noise from most of the top flyers, that means they fly cleaner and have less drag. More flyers have V3 and low profile rigs.

Equipment have not changed since last year. I know some few did personal modification.

New this year, is that Espen proved that you do not have to be heavy and just "dive" down to win. He followed his plan to fly the most efficient route (the shortest way) which also includes being the most aerodynamic flyer.

Frode is 80 kg
Espen is 72 - 73 kg
Robert is 80 kg

Next year I will try to register more data about the Athletes and equipment.

Frode had next best time on 18.56 which is 0,4 improved from last year. He had 33 and 36 sec in canopy time on both his best times. Espen had more than 2 minutes canopy time.

28 suits was from Phoenix
22 was Vampire 3
4 was Phantom 2
2 was Vampire 2
2 Pressurized Twenty G2
2 Birdman
1 Draco
1 Tony suit present but did not compete

Espen took home the Pro BASE title as well today in Lauterbrunnen. Will be interesting to see the line up for the next places.

Congratulations Espen!

I think the top3 were all flying V3's and Oliver in 4th place was flying a Tony Suit (don't know for sure which one, normally he flies X-wing). Other TS's in the competition were at least Markus (6th) and Rob (14th). Reinier in 9th place was flying V2. Very nice event, no incidents and high quality of flying!

Any further specifics regarding speed/time etc?

Not really, I wasn't there all the time and didn't pay that much attention on the times. If I remember correctly Ludo had the overall fastest times and was consistently fastest athlete but had a bad run in the semi's and didn't make it to the top pair. Livia was the fastest girl in the competition and also gave the organisers a good lesson how to fly with top speed on the 3way demo jump before the finals. :) I'm sure Hubsi will come out with detailed scoresheet in near future.
