Coolest way to exit from tailgate?

Recommended Posts

What is the coolest way to exit from a tailgate with a wingsuit?

Do you ask the pilot to increase speed or put it in a dive for more fun?
Is a 2-way a bad idea?
Is going off from the corner less of a dead spot?
Has anyone been hurt from a tailgate exit?

I like high-speed passes, but solos/2-ways are better bets with these or you risk scattering the whole load for miles down jump-run, and it is best to speak to someone who has done this in the past before trying yourself regarding the (manageable) risks involved.

Two-way linked gainer exits (facing the tail) are also a lot of fun; leg wing shoulder width apart with arm wings collapsed and holding hands. Give the key then jump and let the slipstream throw your legs over your head...

With the gainer exits, some jumpers inadvertantly keep the suit in a dive for too long and lose altitude quickly; something to be mindful if trying to get a small flock together.

Ask for more speed, after you've gotten the hang of normal tailgate exits.
Dont let the pilot still be diving at time of exit. Though you can ask for a 500 ft drop in altitude to build up speed (saves fuel and distance to/from drop point), ask the pilot to fly level during the actual exit.
Speed can be fun when done right. Speed can be a bitch when you have a bit of a tumble.

When jumping out, armwings back, legwing on your ass (feet up).
Doesnt matter if the wing is open or closed. As long as the feet are up on your ass. If the feet are stretched, instant dive/tumble (and possibly kicking your buddy in the face)

As long as both face the same way, and not one doing a facing exit, and the other floating. Seen some scary stuff happen that way. Luckely all ending well. But two people flying opposite directions isnt the best of ideas..

When doing a 2 way exit, make sure everyone turns to the sides. This so people are offset a few degrees, and get pushed away from eachother if they hit the wind at an angle. And not into eachother..(which can hurt).

The middle is nicest. The closer to the side, the bigger the chance of wind catching one wing before the other.

Has anyone been hurt from a tailgate exit***

People have hit walls, got pulled out in groups, and had near collisions.
Like anything else in a wingsuit. Practice solo (or at least, some spacing) and than complicate things, up to two ways.

some nice videos (note, some of these are in process of being updated from wmv to flv, so may not work for a day or two).

Herc Boogie - big exit segment midway, with awesome exits and mega tumbles.
An72 2006 - shitload of exits. 70...eh...69 (piere-pierre:P;))
An72 2007 - Boogie - Lots of good and bad ones. Some stupid ones (facing and diving mixed).
An72 2007 - TopGun - TopGun High Speed exit
Skyvan exit - fast but funB|
An72 2008 - Some nice ones midway

I certainly wouldn't ask for the plane to dive. I knew somebody who broke their wrist because the pilot thought everyone was out and dove the plane, the last guy fell and tumbled all the way to the front of the van. Level exits, a must. High speed... sure, it's fun. :)

At the An72 boogie James Boole was doing some impressive backflying exits, as a videoman (jumping out ahead of the group).

In general, I prefer exits where you keep the airplane speed and use it to your advantage. for control and speed/altitude. (and also creating less seperation in groups, as opposed to the plane flying on direction while people are exiting, and the first ones who 'gainered' out already cruising in another direction).
Though the fun to be had with gainers is worth loosing some altitude..as long as exits are not mixed (facing/diving) its all good. A point we cant stress enough..

That said....Id love to see someone get above the plane backflying :P

When doing a gainer, everyone momentarily passes the moment of infinite D/L. But it takes the eye of a hawk and the reaction speed of a cheetah for the photographer to capture that perfect "king" moment like we see on that picture. ;)
