TONYSUIT X-Bird

Recommended Posts

I'd just like to remind the guy earlier who was knocking my suit that the X-Bird has won distance in every event its been entered in for 2 years, Its beat every suit on the market for glide ratio.

Jades suit in Norway was too long so the wing rode up and it was too loose so the wing came away from his bod, both these mistakes of mine put his arms out at 90 degrees.
How can you be so rude towards a guy that spent his last penny going 3500 miles to YOUR boogie?
Life is a series of wonderful opportunities,
brilliantly disguised as impossible situations.

Tony, not start a war, but how can a suit that you built for the first time in July (I just checked back through the thread) be winning comps for the last 2 years?!

Tony, you said it not me. The suit Jade had was slow due to arms......So it was slow and i wasn't just making things up?

So, now we know why the suit didn't fly so well, but still everybody was claiming super distances and speeds. Kinda like if the people commenting were bias.

And what's up with speeds your sponsored flyers were also claiming are insane? Is that still on?

My boogie? Being rude? I found the marketing of the suit rude. Claiming stuff that(what i saw) just wasn't there. Congrats on winning all competitions for the last 2 years on a x-wing.B| Smells of world champions and Freddy Mercury again.

Seriously, congrats to Tobi, winning the gransee event.:P .

P.S. If you need a marketing specialist i know some people that know some people.:PI would be more than happy to try your redesigned x-wing and try it for myself and give an unbiased review of the suit. DEMO maybe?;)

Just have to say one thing. Odeseni: Dont talk abount things you dont have a f... clue about. Congrats with 100ws jumps and YOUR expert opinions. Good tip in the future is to keep this "expert" opinions for yourselfe.
I have flown TS for 3 year and got 3 TS WS and ordered the S-Bird. Tried the T-Bird and it is a SUPER FAST suit (Fastest ws I ever tried). Think the S-Bird is just as fast as the V3. And it start flying at once so dont loose lot of altitude on the exit in basejumping.
http://www.vimeo.com/6469931
This is the S-Bird and not many people flyes over the mountain to the right after exit in bispen (the start of the clip). And as shown on this video. It flyes FAST :) This is by far the best and fastest suit I ever tried and looking forward using it for base.
GOOD WORK TONY AND JADE :)
(Just a shame people that dont have a clue of what they are talking about actually pretend they have)

I don't mean to keep this shit storm raging but I'm gonna throw in my two cents here

The footage of Matt flying in Bispen looks slow. Like really slow. I have seen footage of swoops that look almost that fast. I'm not trying to say that the s-bird is always a slow suit, or even that it can't be flown fast, but I think it is probably one of the best slow fying suits out there.

Matt and I did a jump this summer, I went first and he went after I landed. He was jumping his s-bird and I was in a v3. I remember seeing him fly at what looked to be a really impressive glide, but I had no idea how he was staying aloft while flying so fucking incredibly slow! It was like watching a bus trying to fly! It was one of the weirdest things I had ever seen.

I know that this is just another unsupported anecdote, but I've heard lots of people saying how fast the s-bird is and I have only seen evidence to the contrary. My guess is that, just like I've heard people been saying for a long time, the massive wing that goes down the body probably limits the suits ability to go really fast, but conversely is able to generate a really flat glide at a low speed.

I don't want anybody to think I'm bashing anyone or anything, I just want to see some real evidence that the S-bird can be flown fast instead of people just saying so (just like nobody should dogmatically believe it's slow just because I said so). And anyways, who cares if it's fast or slow? from what I've seen it still flies great.

Hi Oddern,

Reading this thread, some things do have to be sayd...

Odeseni seems to just be commenting on Tony calling him (and anyone else mentioning it) a liar for saying that particular suit was slow in Norway, and than a month or two later fully retracted those strong statments by mentioning construction errors as the reason for the suit appearantly do flying quite slow. Which to me reads like "sorry Odeseni..you were right..and here is why..."

Politics and oppions aside, I cant seem to find actual bashing of the suit/models. I only see Odeseni pointing out some claims on speed quoted regarding the Heliboogie werent accurate.
And Tony now posting an explantion seems to kind of show Odeseni wasnt full of shit, and did actually know. and correctly posted on what he observed in an honest (be it for some people a bit to direct) way.

Even though it was appearantly only one faulty suit, your post reads a bit stronger than it should, seeing as there wasnt any factual error in what Odeseni posted.

Aside from you not agreeing with his oppinions and writing here, I myself wouldnt dare critisising anyones knowledge when I dont know his actual experience. Not everyone makes keeping a DZ.com profile up to date a weekly thing.

I personaly wouldnt mind some tips and coaching on fast and far flying from him I think. Looks like he kinda knows his shit

So far, we don't have any objective evidence that one or the other suit has higher L/D, just that they both have top-line L/D, so for the purpose of understanding let's assume they have the same max L/D.

Then, as it follows from the formula derived in Eiger Challenge thread, the ratio of sustained speeds of two suits is:

Vxs2/Vxs1 = (Kd1/Kd2)^0.5*(((L2/D2)^2 + 1)/((L1/D1)^2 + 1))^(-0.75)*((L2/D2)/(L1/D1))
Vys2/Vys1 = (Kd1/Kd2)^0.5*(((L2/D2)^2 + 1)/((L1/D1)^2 + 1))^(-0.75)

and in this particular case of L2/D2 = L1/D1 it simplifies to

Vxs2/Vxs1 = Vys2/Vys1 = (Kd1/Kd2)^0.5

- the ratio of sustained speeds of two suits is equal to square root of ratio of their magic drag coefficients, inversed.

So if TS suit has drag coefficient 50% higher than PF suit (with the same L/D), it would fly at 82% speed of PF. If PF has 80mph forward, TS will do 66mph.

Note that in case of equal L/D, higher drag coefficient also means higher LIFT coefficient. 1.5x higher drag and 1.5x higher lift.

Since magic coefficients Kl and Kd are proportional to dimensionless coefficients of lift and drag Cl and Cd AND the inverse of wingloading, this 1.5x increase may partially come from aerodynamics and partially from larger surface area. A simultaneous increase in lift and drag coefficients can be caused by thicker airfoil and different wing planform (larger wing root).

On a BASEjump, a suit with the same L/D but slower speed will always have an advantage over speedier suit as it will lose less altitude to reach sustained glide. Here's an example showing two suits with L/D = 2.5 but with 20% difference in speed: slower ends up being 200ft higher than faster one at the same distance, or conversely, 500ft ahead at the same altitude.

Mattresses win not because of finesse of their aerodynamics, but because they start flying sooner.

In distance.

But in BASE race competitions, they will lose.

Good point as always Mccordia. Have much respect for you. Is just tierd of all the shit phoenix-fly loving people throw at Tonysuits.
Still think this is a pritty rude comment:
"Could it be that you just might have lost the sense for speed because of constant flying of the flying carpet suits?"
I think Phoenix-fly have some of the best ws in the world but people have to be open for new suits and not only criticize before trying one. Odeseni can try a S-Bird then criticize it.

Maybe i wasn't clear enough. That was meant as a remark about wing root design of the suits(Stealth included) and not a remark about a particular manufacturer.

It's a public forum. I can express my opinion, be it an expert opinion or not. It's your right to ignore it.

"Odeseni can try a S-Bird then criticize it. "

Sure. Would love to. I never saw an S-bird in action. I was making a remark about the x-bird i saw flying a few 100 ft away from me on a base jump. Me being static.
Quite a good way to compare speeds, don't you think.
And i wouldn't bother commenting if i didn't read, what i thought was misleading info.

Peace out

Hmmm I only wish that there were a speed based base competition held at a super commonly jumped valley that will feature fliers in both leading wingsuit companies top speed suits. Perhaps we will have a speed answer, or at least some objective data in a the coming weeks. Anyone going to be on site competing and able to give updates?

Wow, I just discovered this thread and jeez it's pretty funny.

Speed... Like it's a bad thing that our Tony Suit BASE jumps last 40 seconds longer than yours... LMFAO. Glide and hangtime are awesome. Sinking out is lame. Yes the V3 is faster, it's just a fact that less wing area and a thinner profile means faster airspeed. Yuri is not typing out of his ass, and he even drew you all a picture.

I feel obligated to point out that a couple of you guys are complete duschebags for spewing so much criticism and you don't necessarily 'know your shit'. You obviously spend a disproportionate amount of time posting instead of jumping. It's so pointless, it's like the same 10 people pissing on each other's faces for fun, only it can't possibly be fun, unless you're deranged.

I'm only posting this in case someone who is more interested in choosing a new suit than pissing on someone's face looks at this forum. In that case, they should see what's possible with a Tony Suit.

So as for tony suit performance data, here's mine.
http://www.vimeo.com/7181603

Now post yours.

And if you don't understand this flight and why it's worth showing here, then you shouldn't be criticizing Tony Suits in the realm of BASE. Because obviously they are pretty awesome.

Have fun everyone!

Hmmm I like to think I know my shit, and ill say 40 seconds from high nose is pretty freaking ridiculous. Were you able to to do that consistently or did winds help at all? Nice freaking flying, ill still keep my V3 order, but much respect. By the way, how much is an S-bird anyway?

Nice flights, quite impressive! I liked this one: http://www.vimeo.com/7103784, nice use of ridge lift, but a bit turbulent indeed! Are you guys making it over the football fields on the other side of the main road? That was our main LZ back in '06. Almost got my ass kicked for spoiling a game with a low overpass once

Seems like things have changed a lot while i was away... everybody is into proxy, speed&race nowadays. I can see why (distance is boring compared to proxy), but a shame in a way, as new suits took away endurance problems and added a bit more glide.

bsbd!

Yuri.

Hey, what formula do use to calculate how fun a suit is to fly? Some people like an intense flight. Some people like to hang and take it all in. These numbers are all irrelevant when it comes down to just enjoying your flight and finding your preferred mode.

Personally, I'd exchange some time and distance for a more intense flight. I only care about the sound and feel of the air and the speed at which I watch the ground go by -- not what was logged on a GPS. But big respect to those aiming to push the stats. To each their own.

Mattt, really nice! I was walking towards campground one day and Dean opened above me.
There was a headwind that day so it was still some good distance to campground, but the angle from my viewpoint to the exit point was quite impressive (let alone from the vantage point where he opened). It's awesome to see a human being in freefall in point in space where they "shouldn't or couldn't" be.

Here's a very crude performance estimate from your flight (assuming 40s flight from 1950ft AGL down to 300ft with ~3600ft horizontally):

L/D = 2.77
Vxs = 62.4mph
Vys = 22.5mph

Speak for yourself :) Better understanding of flight coming from my calculations only INCREASES my enjoyment of flight. Nothing is more rewarding than actually seeing the results pulled out of thin air, in real air.

Kinda calculating an unknown planet with paper&pencil, then telling clueless astronomers to point their telescopes into the point in the sky only you know... and bam! there's Neptune there.

If you've never had a kind of high a mathematician or physicist can have, you'll never will. You can take your thinking that civilization progresses by trial and error to K-Mart where you obviously believe all the things you see in life are coming from. ;)

It's really sad to see that the WS forum has degenerated into schoolboy bickering, brand promotion and self validation.

Y’all sound like a bunch of 15 year olds arguing over Mac V PC.

Can you not just keep the narcissism & outrageous performance lies to facebook or something?

This forum used to be a useful source of information, now the majority of content is recycled worthless drivel.

P.S. my Birdman jeans get a GR of 1:1.618;)
