What will the future wing suit resemble?

Recommended Posts

The haviest bird listed is 18kg (mute swan) to 21 kg (great bustart)

And most birds of that weight catagory already way pass us in wingspan

Nowhere near my 89 kg (hopefully down to 85 again after Xmas/new year:P) and my +- 2 meter span?

The largest wingspan of a bird is not on the heaviest bird.. so there must be some significance there. Now what about flying insects .. many rely not on wingspan but on furious flapping. I don't see us buzzing around but it shows that there are options. It seems that wing loading is very important to performance in a passive glide, but the dynamics change when you add action to the wing? Is that stupid?

(pronounced G - jii is the force that makes you fly!)

Which they can do because they are tiny! Scale matters - larger birds don't do that because it doesn't work.
Do you want to have an ideagasm?

the limit is a hanglider, you can land that, but its not a "wingsuit" you cant put it in a plane and you dont need a parachute,
but do hanggliders do RW like we do?
they just fly around getting lift and looking for food like birds, [not Jonatahan of course]
I think were doing just fine, little twekes every year to keep it changing, thats all we can hope for... maybe
Life is a series of wonderful opportunities,
brilliantly disguised as impossible situations.

A little less philosophy and a little more physics and engineering would help you here.
...

The only sure way to survive a canopy collision is not to have one.

Its mini vortexes around the insectwing that enables them to fly.
And that vortex is created by the angle of the wing at certain points, and the speed at which it flaps.
Also one of those cool things that doesnt scale up too well, unless you know some guy who can move his arms up to 100 times per second (though some single internet addicted guys out there may be close on being able to do so:S)

physics and engineering are the way to go..and testing..lots and lots of testing..

my 2 cents:
Agree with Robi and other realists on this. Show the video proof of a wingsuit landing at a DZ (something I've been waiting to see for a looong time now) and then okay, I'll consider philosophy as a solution. Till then aerodynamics and the lift derived from it (through speed), is king in my world.

Tony,

A looong time is more then the 3yrs you have been jumping...... :D And I though Jim was your King? :P

Yea, but since he's gone Glen F. took over that title, you can ask any of the socal guys and they'll admit it, I'm sure.

Jarno, you are my hero (this completes my December 2007 payment of royalties for your amazing artwork on the left ;)). BUT...

Why are you so sceptic about human flying like an insect??? We can make YOU fly like one, and you don't even need to use your legendary brains! We have innumerable technologies for augmenting your strength (clown shoes and animal balloons are just two of them). The force of gravity and the minimum input from your muscles and tendons are enough to power your furious flapping. It is a simple matter of applying faith and philosophy to the problem. We will make you so strong that you'll move massive boulders from Stonehenge to Belgium without using lube and ponies! We will then reduce you in three dimensions to the size of a chicken and superimpose you over the skeleton of a bat. And then... then we'll unleash the crazy ponies and see you take off like a hummingbird!

Keep plopping the acid if that is what it takes to think creatively. Innovative thinkers are not bound by the currently available technologies or understanding of physics. As much as we think we know about physics there is just as much that we don't know or understand.

Consider da Vinci and his "prophesies" of future technology. While there may or may not be another da Vinci out there, a forum like this allows many minds to meld into one and become closer to da Vinci's.

Granted there is a place for the skeptics, without them the discussion would get out of hand. However, playing both sides of the coin is the best mix. IT WASN'T JUST "MATH AND PHYSICS" that sent humans to the moon. Much philosophy and thinking "outside the box" enabled America to be the first to walk on the moon.

If this thread was a means to find out who to invest my $$ in, my dollars would go towards Jii Wings and of course Jarno. (but, I am still trying to figure out how Jarno makes his money) (All the free stuff Jarno puts on the web shows his motivation) (Thanks Jarno!!)

Keep this thread going and let's see what may come out of it!!

Have to disappoint you with the dropping acid bit....A gay bacardi & coke, is as far as it goes..but most people think Im drunk and on accid in my normal behavior, so I dont seem to need it.

As for making money;
Though its been rumoured Ive been spotted on my knees, giving 5 euro blowjobs behind Amsterdam Central station (2 euro discount if you show your BMI/PFI number!). The truth (or the one I want you to believe) is that I have a nice job in my own company doing animation and editing for film and tv commercials which enables me to pay my rent and jump a bit on the side (http://www.airrebels.com check it outB|)

All the wingsuit stuff is somewhere in between hobby and passion (or 'obsession and insanity' according to my girlfriend, she about freaks whenever I mention the word wingsuitB|)

2008 is going to be a cool year..lots of new things happening in flying, and Im sure we'll be amazed many times again by people like Loic, Robi and the VKB boys (great bandname btw!) etc. showing us some new ways of flying and swooping past mountains. Smoother and bigger formations then we ever imagines, and hopefully some tiny cool things from our direction as well...B|

Not to say you cant invest in me...I'll gladly give anyone my (and dont forget costyn, as he spends a lot of time on the tech side of things as I do on the writing/animation) paypall account to support us in our ongoing project 'help jarno become a millionaire':P
But keeping it free and fun seems to be the right thing to do...

ps. (shameless plug) there are a few more articles planned for FLB, and the launch of a new/bigger website for TopGun (some new pix and video)

And to the initial poster> I hadnt seen the videos of the "Spelco gryphon" yet. Quite amazing to see the flat angle of flight (judging the smoke trails). Definitely worth checking out these vids of you havent (bottom of page) http://www.spelco.eu/code/Press/downloads.aspx

Correct. It was math, physics, ENGINEERING, and a LOT of $$$ that sent humans to the Moon.

And Duct tape. Don't forget the Duct tape that helped get them back;)

dont you guys think we well see some further specialisation? a swoopmachine is a completely different pair of shoes than accuracy canopy..

I definately think we'll see further specialization. Mostly marketing/sales orriented...:P

If you tell people they NEED 5 different wingsuits..they'll BUY 5 different wingsuits..;)

:D Yes, and a part of outside the box was German technology, German scietists, etc.
So I habe no doubt, a German will find a way . . .

A bit more time, I will work it out

If you want to fly like a bird - buy a hangglider or a sailplane..
If you want to land your WS - Goodspeed..
You dont need much cash to make something new - Just a brain and a vision..
You dont need big wings - just speed..
Playing around in the sky or in the mountains is already fucking cool - Stop complaining and grow balls instead..
Having dinner at McDonalds every day, doesnt make you any more aerodynamic..
The human body is not a bird - but so what? Do you see any birds flying in at 250 -300 kmh horizontaly? or 550 kmh vertically?
If the flockers could just start to straighten their legs and tilt their head a bit, maybe we could start making some interesting suits instead of the fat suit monster gliders..

Just my thoughts..

Merry Christmas:P

Who said you need a suit to fly?

Imagination without knowledge = just imagination
Skyjester, trust me, you can have tons of imagination, but without at least 1% of understanding u would not move far in the field were Albert was expert.
even less than 0,0000002 % decent educated humans now days barely understand what Albert was about....

experiment:
u need two ( maybe three) friends
two 1.5 m long tables
emergency telephone

purpose:
To get the clue what will happen on WS landing even if all goes perfect. (landing without ''hook'' system)

execution:
connect two tables , lay on it w belly down were the tables are connected. put your hands on your back and tight them.
More or less u are 1 m away from the ground.

1.Close your eyes
2.Tell your friends to remove tables fast simultaneously.
3.Call hospital due serious injuries.

Philosophy!!!

PS Andreas, Mc Chicken - helps i guess, its very popular!!!
