No, I don't agree. (I've been in 3 bigways where people died.)

Wingsuiting?

No, but all related to people not seeing each other and trying to occupy the same space at the same time while moving with very different velocities.

The An72 boogie in germany is a good example. Its the 2nd big wingsuit event there. And on a few dives the bag of luck ran out...and people got SERIOUSLY hurt...and trust me...it sucks te see your buddy on the floor loosing conciousness because of the pain...and it sucks even worse when you realise it was faulty planning and chaos in the sky with people having to perform outside their skills envelope that caused it...

Jarno,
Would you know the specifics as to what happened in these incidents and/or elaborate a little more on what went wrong in these cases specifically. Were they flying opposite to each other? Did they collide vertically? Did it happen at break-off? Etc.... (sorry if this was described elsewhere - tried to find it but couldn't)

Also, in your opinion, what about the planning was faulty? Bad formation choice? Lack of communication? Wrong plane? Etc. etc...

Anything you can offer might be helpful.

Thanks,
Mike

Mike, watch either my 2.0 or 3.0 video on my website. Watch the breakoffs in slow-mo. Count how many paths you see with potential intersections. It never looks like the perfect "pie" that it is supposed to, there are always people with 5-10 degree offsets in their escape routes. Watching the breakoff video it often looks like people are headed right for each other, and probably the only reason they're not colliding in the video is vertical separation (hard to have that depth perception watching the video).

Sorry for the long post, but read on...

From all the comments here and adding comments (offline) from those in the back of formations in the past, I’ve put together a few diagrams for planning purposes. I’m putting these out there for comments and suggestions to improve our safety margins for the next time…the final decision for this event is the organizer’s, not mine – I’ve just volunteered to help out a little.

Once we like what we have as a plan, I’ll add a number to each slot on the diagrams for the person to better identify their planned slot and break off maneuver . It should continually be stated during briefings by the captains: this is a plan – it may not be what happens in the air – be alert for the unplanned!

A couple of points that need explaining:

There are 4 attachments; the 40 and 20 diagrams illustrate a 40-way assembled and the left 20 and right 20 “workshop” jumps. Each group of 20 will work on their formation and break off (remaining clear of the “NO FLY ZONE” – as if the other group were there too) before assembling into the 40-way. The last attachment is half of a 60-way (the other side would mirror the “30”). I only show the 30 because the assembled 60-way would lose detail.

On all diagrams –
The green dots are adding forward speed (remaining on level) and the red dots are slowing forward speed (remaining on level).

The open wedge space in the middle behind the "NO FLY ZONE" is reserved for the stragglers – we know they are going to continue following (even if we tell them not to pull high) so we might as well plan for a little deploy area.

Flocking speed and level should be maintained by everyone unless otherwise indicated.

Stragglers (taken out on exit, floaters, etc.) –
Must absolutely recognize by 8000-9000’ they will not make it into the formation and begin scanning the area for other stragglers and find their “space”. As anyone in this area was unplanned, the person(s) in the area must clear their airspace 180 degrees right and left (as well as below). Stragglers must slow their forward speed and maintain flight until 500-1000’ above the initially assigned break off altitude (not deployment altitude – stragglers MUST PULL HIGH) for the jump, signal a double wave off (at least 4 heel clicks) and deploy.

To the other exceptions – anyone going low on the formation (and unable to safely rejoin the group in their slot by the beginning of break off), should slowly begin a diving turn until 90 degrees to the flight path of the formation in the opposite direction from the "NO FLY ZONE" and continue until reaching the deployment altitude, wave off and deploy. This should place them well behind and outside of the formation deployment area by break off. A ride back in the DZ's car is better than a Lifeflight to the hospital for two - when in doubt, get out, way out!

On the “30” diagrams –
The last group of 10 on each side wing will be the only ones deploying at different altitudes (deployment indicated by the blue circle). The separation should be a couple seconds of flight apart and begin almost immediately at “Stage 2”.

[Note: we can’t be sure how well this plan will work for 80 (verses 70). If we get up to 80, we will need to evaluate how well it worked for 70 and adjust.]

A final note - as we will likely be filling to the inside, each person should also know what the break off is for the next two inward slots (at least) – if they are unsure, they should not take the slot and risk screwing the break off for everyone.

B|
This is only a first draft and not the final version by any means - let the discussion begin…

My compliments on the well thought out seperation...definitely think this is a more then excelent starting point for what could and should become standard on bigways in terms of thought and dicipline that went into creating it...!

Need to register now that I got a flight to TPA booked.. I know of a few west coast birds not noted on the latest list showing up, 4 including me I think I have counted not listed... Looking forward to the trip and hoping it will be fun and the weather is awesome! Can someone order that for the weekend please...

Other then crashing at the DZ, what are some suggested places to stay if I decide to go that route.. Basically looking for not that far from the DZ and relatively cheap as I don't anticipate I will be in the room that much.

I would recomend the microtel or Best Western... both are close. The microtel is near walmart and chilis which are both positives. Or you can stay on the dz. Call manifest and ask for pip or judy for a trailer which are $20 if I'm not mistaken.

Th trailers are completely booked for 4.0. so try something else. unless there are last minute cancellations

Since I'll be flying in from Houston for this one, I can't lug my tent along.

I got a room at the Quality Inn & Suites near the DZ, non-smoking, two queen beds, $85 per night, for 3/13-3/16. If anybody wants to split it with me and share costs, send a PM.

Finally registered on line this morning. How many are on the registered list. Heard the # is low this year thus far for registering.. Maybe with all of the "events" happening this year it is going to be hard for people to pick and choose the ones they want to go to..

Anybody know what kind of aircraft will be there?

And what does the $45 registration fee get you? Any beer, food, t-shirt..?

Sorry it took so long for a reply...thought someone else would have covered it:

Video and organizing slots (no $$ collecting at dirt dive)
Dinner Friday and Saturday night.
Beer on Saturday night.
Wing Walking & Beer contest!

Door prizes:
Chance to win Free Phoenix-Fly wingsuit or Tracking suit. (excluding V-2)
Chance to win Skydive City jump tickets. (2 blocks of 5)
Chance to win Morpheus Laptop bag
Chance to win Morpheus skydiving gear bag.
Chance to win $50 gift certificate to Sunshine Factory.
Chance to win 50% off of a Wings skydiving container.

There's more that they are working on, but these are the confirmed...

BTW: I just got around to registering and Kathy said there's a lot of people still not registered - please do it so they can get enough T shirts for everyone. Clicky register here!

All,

We have about 30 people currently registered. If you want to attend AND you want a shirt, you have to register ahead of time. If you just show up, there may not be a shirt for you.

www.baserigs.com

Also, it's looking like we're not going to have the throngs of wingsuiters that could have showed up. This means we can more easily concentrate on technical dives over sheer size ... I'm sensing a perfect 16/25/36 way coming up!

Scott
