NEW MILITARY WINGSUIT?

ESG gives you wings – the parachute system for special operations
In the future, high-tech wings will make it possible for parachutists to quickly cover a distance of up to 200 kilometres.

Berlin, 15 May 2006

ESG Elektroniksystem- und Logistik-GmbH and Dräger (both part of the SPELCO Consortium) have designed a parachute system for the special operations units of the German Bundeswehr. The system has already been in use since 2003 but in the future it will be complemented with a special subsystem that is currently being developed in the form of a modular wing that is connected to the parachute. The wing is designed to enable parachutists to cover a distance of up to 200 kilometres (in the development stage).

As it is now, the system allows operation units to jump from a height of about ten kilo-metres and to cover a distance of up to 40 kilometres carrying up to 100 kilogrammes of equipment. Parachutists can thus penetrate into areas that are difficult to reach without their transport planes having to fly into a danger zone. At the same time, tracing this almost 100% silent parachute system using air or ground-based radar systems is extremely difficult. Night operations or operations under adverse weather conditions are possible.

With the newly developed wing, the radius of operation for the parachute is increased considerably. The parachutists can reach their target at a greater speed and are even less detectable than before. Also, the new wing allows them to operate unaffected, to a large extent, by wind conditions. The wing will be equipped with a guiding and stabilisation system. The integration of small turbo jet drives for UAVs in the second development stage will make it possible to carry persons over long distances without the need to jump from an extreme height.

Visitors at the ILA 2006 can view the parachute system with the wing and a range of subsystems (such as a navigation or an oxygen supply system) at the ESG booth in Hall 7.

From the sounds of both articles, this is a re-hashing of the Skyray or the Switchblade. The Germans have had an interest in the Skyray for some time and the Brits have played with the Switchblade as have others. Both systems have found little to no support from the people who would use them. As one of the people who would potentialy use this device for real, I don't find it being even remotely fesiable in a real combat situation.

This is only slighly off topic,Iwill be doing ha wingsuit jumps later this year,Where can one find the reg/bottle setup for a three pin gentex?---The lackof support alone DEEP in hostile territory means pillfering from the locals and living off the land, the dynamics of that wing are obsurd to say the least.200lbs of gear/suplies???? who will be responsible for cg placement,a specially qualified rigger? Or some poor slob who doesnt understand moments of inertia. No escort in usually means no escort out.Silent??,jet powered??,you'll need atleast a VERY large puddle to hide that thing. Its a lot a dreamwork that just not a feasable option,as it places an unrealistic amount of tangents, dynamicaly out of the operators control.

Who cares if it wont work? they build and we can steal/reverseengineer/buy one and have more fun than should be aloud to have.

You had better start saving now then. I have been asked to test this thing out if and when they get them from the manufacturer for evaluation. At $43 thousand USD each, I don't think you will see too many of these at the local DZ any time soon.;)

It looks a solid wings for me. Why would I want to have something that I not board jumpship with?

43K is only if the gob'ment is buying them, you know how it is with contractors Lou. You could build that thing for under $400 in supplies from the aircraft spruce catalog.....if only you could download the plans from somewhere on the internet.

Sorry - only in german...

Here's Babelfish's attempt at translation:

High Tech wing

You can at least make out what they're trying to say. :)
James, I didn't know you also had an alias "Glenn Singleman" :P How do the authors of the article think the person making the photo is also the subject? remote control? WTF?

On the Boogie in Cochstedt we have seen 2 Testjumpers with this flying systems. She made a couple of testjumps out of the Antonow 72.
The guys tell me that she must have 340ft² Parachutes :o and at the moment there are no turbines on this glide system.

I had a serious linetwist after on of my wingsuitjumps (in high winds)and landet ca. 1km out, near to one of this guys. :D

I seem to hear them talk about 4.0 glide-ratios, and they seemed to use a tandem-like setup in terms of the parachute.

After deployment, the wing detached, and ended up hanging underneath the jumpers.

They looked like alternate versions of Buzz Lightyear...B|
