Wingsuit Flying general questions. Anyone want to respond?

Recommended Posts

I've read some of the posts on this board and have a basic understanding of wingsuit flying, have been to www.bird-man.com but I have more questions if anyone would like to address them.

Feel free to compare or contrast RW, FF and WS flying as a comparison, and add whatever you feel is required for clarity.

1. If a skydiver falls at 120mph, how fast do the freeflyers fall and how fast does a wingsuit flyer fall?

2. How fast can a skydiver track compared to a wingsuit in mph?

3. If skydivers have 60 seconds of freefall from 12,500 to 3,000 ft, how long can wingsuit flyers free fall?

4. Does a wingsuit have to track in order to slow freefall times or can they just fall straight down like RW flyers?

5. Is the thrill tracking or falling straight down in wingsuit flying?

6. What are the best websites for data, videos, pictures etc for wingsuit flying?

7. Where is the sport of wingsuit flying going in? Bigger wings, hard wing surfaces...? Did wings begin with the camera flyers and evolve into sport flyers?

8. How safe or dangerous is it compared to RW, FF etc?

9. Has wingsuits dramtically altered base jumping? Can WS jumpers jump from areas that skydivers couldn't...?

Thanks and please include anything you think is important that I have failed to mention.;)

The history of wingsuits is on : http://www.flybirdman.com/about/

but there are subdisciplines such as freestyle as well as distance.

>1. If a skydiver falls at 120mph, how fast do the freeflyers fall and how fast does a wingsuit flyer fall?

Freefliers fall 140-170 MPH. Birdmen average in the 50's and can go as slow as the 30's.

>2. How fast can a skydiver track compared to a wingsuit in mph?

Horizontal numbers are hard to generate... but lets just say a freefalling tracker would only make it maybe a third of a good birdman.

>3. If skydivers have 60 seconds of freefall from 12,500 to 3,000 ft, how long can wingsuit flyers free fall?

2 minute + flights are common and pushing the numbers to 2 minutes 30 seconds is'nt unheard of.

>4. Does a wingsuit have to track in order to slow freefall times or can they just fall straight down like RW flyers?

Open the wings and you are in flight, close them and you speed up and fall.

>5. Is the thrill tracking or falling straight down in wingsuit flying?
The Thrill is in flying like a bird B|

>6. What are the best websites for data, videos, pictures etc for wingsuit flying?
Bird-man.com is great. Flybirdman.com is another great site.

>8. How safe or dangerous is it compared to RW, FF etc?
Its more dangerous then a solo skydive.. the rest is up to your decisions in the suit.
Yesterday is history
And tomorrow is a mystery

Umm, basically what he said!

1. I've got mine down to the low to mid 50mph range.
2. Not sure how fast, but, A long freakin' way now that I have figured out my Skyflyer!
3. Best one to date from 13,000 down to 5,000---2 min, 48 secs
4. YOU CAN FALL STRAIGHT DOWN WITH THESE THINGS?
5. YOU CAN FALL STRAIGHT DOWN WITH THESE THINGS?
6. bird-man.com and flybirdman.com
7. Ain't no tellin', hell, I didn't ever think I would be able to fly like I am with my Wingsuit, so I really couldn't say where they are going next!!!
8. What is RW? Umm, I would say a tad bit more dangerous than FF, but like my predecessor says, depends on the suit you choose!
9. Don't BASE jump, so I cannot comment on that!
10. Hmm, any information that you have failed to mention, well, lets just say that if you have ever dreamed of flying when you were a kid, (*Or a big kid like most of us) then this is the shit. Nothing compares to it. And as the "Warning" label on the suit says, It is very addicting. Probably more addicting than, umm, well, you know.

"Sure, those Golf Carts may look all warm and fuzzy, but they WILL take a chunk out of your ass!"
