blacklabjumper 0 #1 November 26, 2010 I am concolidating a thread I started in another forum. So if some you guys here have already read this I apologize. I just thought this would be the better place to get my questions answered. OK here is the long and the short of it. I am intersted in doing some "casual" CRW. I currently fly a Sabre2 190 with an exit weight of 235lbs. I plan on doing a couple of CRW jumps a weekend. Deepending on my schedule. I want a canopy that I can use while I fly tandem video and my regular free fly jumps as well as hop pops. I would say that I would be doing CRW 2 of every 20 jumps. I have read all of the manufacturer's specs for both canopies. I am looking to see what the experienced people have to say. Size wise I am looking at the Tri Hybrid 160 or The storm Hybrid 170. What do you guys think about the size? Is there any reason why I wouldn't want the Storm "casual crew kit" full time. They offer it installed or sold separately. I don't see any reason why I wouldn't get it already on the canopy. What are the opinions? I definitely want to hear pros and cons of both from all parties. I understand I have alot to learn about CRW but I want to at least take baby steps in getting involved. It may lead to greater involvement in the future but can't say for sure. Thank you in advance to everyone for your help in answering my questions. It is greatly appreciated.Rodriguez Brother #1626 Dudiest Skydiver #1962 DPH #-
morris 0 #2 November 27, 2010 We´ve got three Storms (150,135,120) with the "casual-CF-kit" AND dacronlines. On one (or was it two?) of the chutes we´ve had the outside A-lines changed as well to be uncascaded. I don´t see any reason not to jump the "casual-CF-version" on every jump, you don´t need to use the additional rings on top of the chute all the time, just as you need ´em. Get the kit! The only thing to think about is the linechoice...
faulknerwn 38 #3 November 27, 2010 The most common wing loadings for lightnings out there is 1.3-1.4. So you're a bit heavy on the tri and would be more compatible one size up. The storm is a good choice but only if you are around other people with storms. There rate of descent is radically different than triathlons/lightnings/specters and they don't fly together. But if your crw buddies all have storms then they'll work fine. If your crw buddies have tris or lightnings then you should go with the triathlon choice. Definitely get the casual crw option on either - the canopies are still fine to take into Freefall but are better for crw So I would definitely say find out what canopies and wing loadings the people you are wanting to do crw with are jumping - you don't want to be at a 1.5 wig loading if they're at 1.3 - crw is about flying as similar canopies as possible. You don't want to be on a storm if theyre all on triathlons ( or vice versatile )

blacklabjumper 0 #5 November 27, 2010 OK Thanks. I am with you on the wing loading and similar canopies. I wondering more about people's experience flying the different canopies. Why would someone prefer one over the other. Thank for the inofrmation. I am learning all the time abd that was very helpful.Rodriguez Brother #1626 Dudiest Skydiver #1962 DPH #-

FreeFlyer2100 0 #7 November 29, 2010 Something to keep in mind is that the Storm is a tapered elliptical canopy where the Tri/Lightning/Spectre are all square. This doesn't mean anything when compared to flying relative to others but it means a lot with control. I fly a lightning when I know I am doing a CRW jump and fly a storm on any jump that will have free fall. Just like everyone is telling you the Storm is trimmed very steep and will sink out very quickly on Tri/Lightning/Spectre canopies. So when I am doing "casual" CRW after a freefall jump and the others have a Tri I know that I can not go low on them. I also usually get one chance to top dock or to pin someone before I sink out on them. The storm is a lot of fun to fly, has a strong flare and turns on a dime but will take some extra skill to use for casual CRW with other canopies. Good luck with your search and if you come to Chester anytime let me know and we can make a few jumps.
selbbub78 0 #8 December 5, 2010 When I first started to try CRW (not knowing that it was the best discipline in skydiving yet), I got a tri hybrid. I found no problems doing casual CRW with lightnings. I liked my tri (i still use it for freefall sometimes), and I would go with a try-hybrid (wing loaded for CRW jumps).
