Flying a Storm with Lightning?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Most people in the UK jump Lightnings so I've been looking for a used Lighting 176 but have had no luck as yet. Please PM me if you have one to sell.

I'm reluctant to buy a new Lightning because I can see people swapping over to the Storm in the near future - Then people will want you to jump Storms!!!

My main question is "Has anyone tryed flying a Storm with a Lightning" ??? If it works ok then I may just get a new Storm and wait for everyone else to swap over.

Cheers,
Andy

we did: making formations together is somewhat impossible: storm flies with steeper angle and is much faster.

our cameraman in the CF-2 team does uses a lightning together with our storms, but also has a high wingload on that lighting, and uses the b-line toggles and our burble a lot to stay close.

Ive spoke to a few people in the UK and thier pretty sure that the swap wont be in the near future, ive never jumped a storm but what ive been told from people who do is that "it is an all round canopy, and has good nice openings and flares well ect...., however it doesnt specialise in one disepline " . Lightnings are designed just for CRW so why not buy new? majority of people doing CRW do it on lightnings or triathlons in the uk, and i cant see people in this economical climate reaching into their pockets and forking out for a storm when they have a perfectly good lightning. i looked at this when i was buying a CRW canopy and this was the advice i got. if my advice is poor why not ring steve saunders or ian marshall im sure they will push you in the right direction.

Any larger formation stuff will be done on lighnings for the most part. Triathalons are popular all over the world for CRw

Dedicated Crw doggies who like to have several crw canopies and have money for some newish stuff have invested in the smaller storms. After the world record some of the guys that tried the storms were really excited about them. Last years nationals featured a team on Storms. Sounds like this year there will be a few others to join using storms for competition. So it really depends what kind of CF you will do.

Hi Jamie,

this is exactly what I mean. I have talked to both Ian & Steve about other canopies (e.g. AR7, Tri’s, Rubis, Spectre, Storm etc) but they staunchly believe in the principle of only one God, “The Lightning”, and will be only to happy to push you in that direction, but a couple of other things to consider are....

a. Steve & Ian have literally dozens of Lightning’s for Team Outcasts. At about £1000 a time, to swap over would cost them tens of thousands of pounds.

b. Their flying techniques have been refined over the decades and thousands of jumps based on the Lightning. Swapping over would mean developing new skills and techniques based on the new canopy, which will cost in terms of time and money and I’m not sure how many years they have left before they get their free buss passes as pensioners!!!

IMHO, for team Outcasts it makes perfect sense to stick with Lightning’s, at least until such time that they see a “significant” performance improvement in other teams using Storms to the extent that it precludes them from being competitive. For me, unless I find a good used 176, I think I'll stick on the 193 and use lots of lead until we see how other teams get on with the Storm or any other CRW canopy for that matter.

Best regards,
Andy
PS. Good luck for this weekend mate. PM me and let me know how everyone got on :)

There's really another aspect of this to consider.

Years ago, when most canopies were CReW friendly, just about everyone did CReW. Nowadays, you need to travel to a dz that has a few CReW dogs if you’re interested in learning the discipline.

The Storm could change all that. After making several jumps on the Storm and being an older CReW Pup, I enjoyed the softer openings, flight characteristics and particularly the soft landings. Plus, the Storm could be used as an "everyday" canopy! No need for a second or third rig just to do CReW.....

I for one can't wait for the transition. I'd be very happy jumping a Storm as my everyday canopy. It could very well bring in the young bodies needed to keep CReW alive and vibrant.

An excellent point and very well made. That would be very cool. Imagine just rocking up to the DZ and doing spontaneous CRW like FF/FS!!!

The only down side I see is the track record for the Spectre. I bought one for all the good reasons of buying a Storm but hardly anyone does CF and certainly not on Spectres :S

Andy

Steve and ian have all those rigs yes and it would cost alot to swap them to storms but i think the main reason is lightnings are the canopy used around the world for CRW, its a canopy that has proved itself time and time again, yes its a different skill set but why would you try and fix something that isnt broken? Im sure people will buy storms but primarilay for CRW? maybe not. Its like a triathlon hybrid yea its a good canopy and when you fancy doing CRW you can but no good for serious CRW if everyone is using ligtnings.
I think the best advice would be listen to steve and Ian they have been doing it for years, theyve seen people doing CRW on Furys, triathlons, lightnings, spectre, velocity ect.... they have seen and know how different canopies react with one another and thier advice is prob the best advice your going to get rather than asking people on a forum that you dont know. me personally would go with what they have advised you. ok dont buy a brand new lightning 176 but look about there is a dutch guy that puts people in touch with sellers or buyers of lightnings, but there are alot of 176's out there, if you think a 176 is hard to get hold of try a 143 nightmare! haha.
i did a 5 stack the other week with 2 lightnings and 3 triathlons when we were altogether the formation oscelation was hidious mix and match canopies isnt a good idea, that means you would have to meet people who have a storm CRW ready, which ive only seen one on a military demo team..

Jamie,

This thread is about how Storm flys with Lightning, which it doesn't by the sounds of it, not about which canopy is best. That said, I think its a very interesting discussion in its own right so have started a new thread: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=3590376;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;forum_view=forum_view_collapsed;;page=unread#unread

Ian & Steve are good guys and I'm not knocking what the say but I like to come hear and get other opinions from CRW jumpers around the world. In terms of experience, If you look up the list, only you and I have less than 1000 jumps  BTW The Dutch guy is called "Eward Slot" and he found me here when I was asking around about a 176, and Ian also mentioned Cato might have one, they don't but they also post here, see above!

Best regards
Andy
