bodypilot90 0 #1 November 3, 2015 A friend just took back his $2100 laptop because his girl friends 1000 Macbook killed it on rendering times and 4k playback. We both are weekend organizers, looking to speed things up a bit. I have never had a mac, so is this typical? Not into mac/windows bashing
michalm21 0 #2 November 4, 2015 Not to bash your post, but it's like asking what car is the best... It all depends on what you work with, what video formats, what software. I'm sure some more knowledgable people will give you suggestions, but it'd be great if you posted more details about the footage you plan working with and what you're transcoding to (and from). I've worked on both OS X and Win. For my non commercial purposes (read home video on a big screen) it's a wash (doesn't matter really) but I prefer macs. Edited: search this forum for DSE's posts. He usually posts great advice on this subject.
bodypilot90 0 #3 November 4, 2015 we both work with gopro 4 black in 4k using sony vegas pro 13, We use 4k for the frame grabs. My I7 seems to struggle playing unedited 4k choppy even with dual video cards and 16 gig of system ram, My laptop does not have a solid state drive. Just seems strange that a $1000 macbook air did a smoother faster job in Imovie than ours did in Vegas 13. Perhaps it's a setting in vegas but just trying to get a handle on why rendering times would be twice as long for 720 uploaded to youtube.
photognat 0 #4 November 5, 2015 There's something else going on there. A stock $1,000 MBA has the equivalent performance of a $300-$400 Dell/Sony/Lenovo PC. Download Geekbench (http://www.primatelabs.com/geekbench/) and compare your score to a MBA (http://browser.primatelabs.com/geekbench3/search?utf8=%E2%9C%93&q=macbook+air). Try reinstalling Vegas or possibly your whole OS. And for just ~$170 you can drop in a brand new 512GB SSD. It'll feel like a brand new computer, guaranteed. My laptop is slower at everything when it's running on battery, I'd assume it's a power saving setting somewhere that I can change.

Bonny1 0 #7 December 22, 2015 The switch from Windows to Apple was amazing easy. I’ve been Windows bigot for a long time, am an IT professional, and just switched to a MacBook Air last November. It was rediculous how things just work on the Apple. If I had known it was this easy I would have switched a long time ago.http://macphun.com/
aaronschimke 0 #8 December 23, 2015 I had a similar issue with my brand new ASUS w/ Windows 10 and I7...then I found this quick vid explaining a DLL issue on the new Vegas Pro. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=diekcFt5LXI I'd give this a try as well, since it fix my lag issue on the Preview mode...there are also many quick tutorials specific to Vegas Pro that will help increase render speeds. Hope this helps!
sdls 0 #9 December 26, 2015 It seems that you may have an issue that your Vegas is using CPU for (en/de)coding of video. That task should be performed on GPU. Normally on laptops there should be setting that which apps are using CPU (integrated) for calculating things and which are using GPU (video card processor). You could also try to disable integrated graphics processor from device manager and then try how it goes.
