Recommended Posts

Hey all;
for those of you that have heavy-use Vegas systems;
what have you all found works best for protecting your computer from Viruses/Malware/Adware etc. without slowing your system down?

Anti Virus programs?
Firewalls?

Any info would be appreciated!

The best protection is keeping it off the Internet, and not allowing it to be used for anything except video editing (i.e., no e-mail web browsing, gaming, etc.). If you have a clean system and keep it quarantined, you shouldn't have a need for anti-virus.

Exactly this. Machines need to be on the web for Youtube/Vimeo uploads, but gaming, emails, facebook, blah blah...that's where the crap happens. Machines can be locked out of all URLs except specifics; I recommend this to all our clients.

Instead of going the AV route look instead at application whitelisting technology. You end up getting better security and no performance impact on the systems. It will essentially let you control everything that is able to run on the system. This is what is being used in ATM's, cash registers and other systems that are every small on processing abilities but still need to be protected from viruses.

I'm not in a high volume situation, so I chose to keep my editing PC protected with antivirus despite the performance hit. That said, I can still render a SD tandem video on Vegas in 2-3 minutes or less (i7 CPU with 6 GB RAM).

I've had good success with ESET Smart Security. It's nowhere near the memory pig that the Symantec & McAfee products can be. I also like the idea that I can get multiple licenses on the web for multiple years at a healthy discount.
