Laptop for editing

I don't know anything about laptops. I was looking at a Mac Book Pro, but another jumper said an apple would be better for editing. Thoughts and suggestions?

But a Mac Book Pro is an apple...

although I'm a PC guy and actually kind of like my ASUS laptop a UL30A... If I was getting an ASUS now I'd probably go for the U30Jc...

The Apple Macbook Pro is a great laptop! I have the 2.8Ghz 17" one myself.

Apple makes great hardware.

The beauty of the Macbook Pro is that you can start it up in OSX or Windows... So it's a Mac AND a PC... The downside is if you go that route... You're going to PAY for it. Apple Macbook Pro's aren't cheap. But they aren't cheaply made either.

This is very general advice since you don't specify anything besides "editing".

What you want to buy mostly depends on your budget and on how fast you need your editing to be (having to make 20min calls on a tandemvid on a laptop is a challenge) and wether you want to store the videofiles on the laptop itself.

For fast editing, get a core i7 laptop, 2 fast internal harddrives (might want to chage the first one out for a SSD), as much DDR3 RAM as they sell, a firewire port if you are using a tape camera, e-sata or usb3 for a fast external harddrive if you want to use that, a big screen to edit easily. A dvd burner if you edit to DVD.

A laptop like that will make your editing life easier but is quite heavy to lug around and will be quite expensive, also have a short battery life. A good editing PC however (same specs) will cost you half and be much faster too.

If you're NOT is a big rush when editing, you can just get a core i5 laptop and an external harddrive, include dvd burner and firewire as needed. Or the same specs for a pc (or a intel core2quad).

In general, I'd stay away from laptops or PCs with AMD processors, laptops made by acer or packard bell, anything under USD 600 or so for an editing laptop.

put slightly differently:
"I don't know anything about accuracy, but another jumper told me a tandem canopy would be better for me..."

Specifics about what you know, what you want to know, budget, how you'll use it, what kind of camera gear...
Just up and buying an Apple because someone said it would be best is like buying a tandem canopy for softer landings.

I have a CX150, and my main intention for the laptop is editing. Secondary is porn, and third is more porn. I can afford it, and the people i've talked to said it's a solid system. The manifest bitch next to me said a Dell or Toshiba would be just as good and would be a third of the price, and he thinks Mac's are "douchebaggery".

What i'm pretty sure i want is a dvd burner, cd burner, and a high definition burner, since i would like to try out burning some high definition videos.

This is the one he just showed me:

It looks good, but it doesn't look like it has a high definition dvd burner.

If burning to BD is your desire, then forget Apple.
You can burn HD on a DVD 5 as long as the length doesn't exceed approx 22 mins.

Dell makes amazing laptops, IMO. I have a couple 6300's used for students.
If outputting video fast is your need, Apple is the wrong direction. If you already know Apple products and don't want a learning curve, Apple is a good direction.
No one builds a better (in terms of tough, sexy, physical plant) laptop than Apple. I carry an MBP because I'm required to for the work I do. I use the Windows partition 80% of the time. I use the Apple side for Motion, occasional FCP and AVID, and rarely...After Effects. Photoshop runs better on the PC side, so does Premiere Pro.
PC laptops are generally easier to deal with if you want to be flexible, IMO.

If you're serious about porn, be sure you have a good anti-virus. Phree can help you with that.
One bennie to a Mac...they're not _as_ vulnerable to virus as PC's are, but that too, is changing.

Apple makes a good machine, but you'll pay for it.
Linux is great and has many great editors to choose from for free.
Many places sell Ubuntu machines ready to go
the new Fedora core is really good also.

Stay away from Sony and Dell.

Uh, what? I've been a techie my whole life and switched from windows to linux as soon as I could. I regularly use windows as I'm in IT, but I have linux boxes and my macbook pro.

Just kinda confused by your statement because personally, after you learn, and I mean really learn the unix system and how it works, you both appreciate it immensely as well as hate windows with a passion!

What I assumed he meant by that is that if you are not fairly computer savvy then stay away from a Windows machine, because they demand more tweaking than Apple and Linux, and they're nowhere near as reliable.

Excuse me if I'm wrong.

There are also damn few reasonably good (or fast) editing applications for anything BUT Windows and Apple.
This isn't GeekSquad, it's video editing for pro's or semi-pros. They're tools.
Windows is just fine for 99.999999% of anything one wants/needs to do. Especially if porn browsing is at the top of the list.:P
