File format conversions

I have a large .m4v file that I can't read into my editor. As far as I can tell it looks like a .mp4 with a name change. Is this correct?

Anyhow, can anyone recommend a video file conversion program, suitable for occasional use (that is, free or cheap).

http://www.media-convert.com/ doesn't seem to recognize .m4v files

Thanks. Interesting web site, it does everything it possibly can to make it difficult to download Super and encourage download of another, non free, program.

I've been using this one:

Probably not the easiest one to use if you have no idea what different containers and codecs are, but does its job pretty good if you know what you're doing.
