new camera helmet

Recommended Posts

it's got nothing to do with where you jump, it's got everything to do with the fact that you don't have enough experience to be safe

you can die in south africa just like you can die anywhere else. get your attitude in check about skydiving and safety, or you'll prove my point.

If you have nothing constructive to say, like why he shouldnt be jumping a camera just yet or answer his question on topic - then it's best to say nothing at all then say something as original as

Can I be on your ash dive???
Ive always wanted to visit south africa

AfricanKid, you may want to look at the tonfly helmets - they have gotten some good reviews lately and have a great option of adjustable camera mount - see their Converter

P.S. it's way too early to think about jumping camera at 80 jumps

2K Composites
Skysystems
Bonehead
Cookie
Tonfly
all have helmets with cutaway systems on them. None of them have snag points as they come; skydivers create snag points in how they build their helmets.
I just ordered a Tonfly Fuego, if you can wait a week or so, I'll have a review up. I primarily jump a Bonehead FTP, which is IMO, the safest kind of helmet to jump due to the large flat area on top, but it still will have *some* snag points.
Understand that at 80 jumps, you're going to get some grief. However, if you're jumping solo and are able to do the jumps without a camera in the helmet at first, this will help you learn to deploy, how the helmet will affect your flying, etc. Put a bunch of jumps on an empty and then lightly weighted helmet.
Please read the sticky at the top of this forum.

you can come visit but im not gona die from jumping with a cam...

It's true that there isn't a written "rule" that you can't jump a camera helmet at 50 jumps, but there are recommendations. Those recommendations came into exisitance because camera helmets have killed people.

If you honestly don't think a camera helmet can kill you, you're only reinforcing that you don't have enough experience to wear one.

Exactly. So then someone might make two conclusions here. First one is - hey, if she died in a camera related accident with 3000 jumps, then what can a 80 jump wonder can hope for? Or, that her experience level made no difference in the outcome.

Don't you think it would also be reasonable to say that if instability with a camera helmet can kill someone with 3000 jumps, and arguably more situational awareness and ability, that it would be a lot more likely to kill someone with 80 jumps?

IMO, recommended jump numbers aren't designed to guarantee doing something won't kill you, they're designed to move people into the shorter ends of the bell curve. Unfortunatley, whether you have 80 jumps or 3000 the bell curve never closes.

That fatality report confused me when I read it, it still confuses me now. First para says she was shooting a 2-way.
Description says she was shooting a tandem.
Neither one likely was involved in the lack of stability, but the lack of accuracy makes me wonder what else might be missing or extraneous.

Dont you think that's just what i said above as the first conclusion? :)

In any case - answers like a couple of comments above wont convince this guy to change his mind and are pretty much useless. Information is power, either give him the info he asked for or explain why he shouldn't jump camera.

How about filling out your profile? Where you jump, what license you hold, etc. That way us camera flyers who live in South Africa can offer you some advice, or at least point you in the direction of someone on your local DZ who can help you out on advice on what helmet to get and whether you're ready to jump a camera.

wrt rules of when you're allowed to jump a cam helmet here in SA, refer to the MOPs (you'll find this in sec 2 - Basic Safety and more in sec 10 entitled Camera persons (www.para.co.za):

5 CAMERAPERSONS

Camerapersons not yet in possession of a B licence shall have their helmets approved by the CI / SO.
Camerapersons must wear a functioning altimeter, a functioning audible altimeter and a hook knife.
Camerapersons must be au-fait with an appropriate camera cutaway procedure.
There are three recognised groups of camera work each with it’s own specific minimum requirements:

5.1 BASIC CAMERA – a single camera used or worn to film from within a skydive
Minimum requirements:
• Category II in any one of FS, AE or S&A
• must have the signed approval of the CI / SO

5.2 THIRD-EYE CAMERA – a single camera used or worn to film from an outside perspective
Minimum requirements:
• to film FS is Category III in FS or AE
• to film AE is Category III in AE
• to film CF is Category III in CF
• to film S&A is Category III in FS or AE
• must have the signed approval of the CI / SO

5.3 SPECIALISED CAMERA (AFF AND TANDEM CAMERA) – a camera used or worn to film AFF or
tandem or if more than 1 camera is worn at any one time

Minimum requirements:
• Category III in FS or AE
• a minimum of 500 formation jumps (100 in the last year) or 100 Third-Eye camera jumps (50 in
the last year)
• must have the signed approval of the CI / SO and the approval of relevant AI / TM

However, there are so many more intracacies to flying camera than just buying a helmet and reading what the mops say (read the thread entitled "all the little things about cameraflying"), why not chat to some of the more experienced guys and save yourself some of the hassles that we've all been through?

To answer your question though, pretty much all of the helmets available to you via the net are going to cost you an arm and a leg with our exchange rate. I love my Bonehead Optik though, but again, chat to people on your DZ and see what they are jumping, ask if you can try their helmets on and see what fits your head ;)

However, there are at least two guys here in SA who make their own range of helmets, if you'd spoken to local flyers you might know this, let me know where you jump and i'd be glad to put you in contact with them.

edited to add: section 5.3 should also give you somr food for thought on your question in your thread on lenses as you mentioned flying with tandems.

Oh, and i forgot to mention, nice choice of screen name B|

Why do you think we call it sport death?
Pick another sport to die in ,we have enough deaths without someone doing something insane! Get some jumps ! :)

A friend will bail you out of jail , a REAL friend will be sitting next to you in the cell slapping your hand saying "DUDE THAT WAS AWSUM " ................

Jan was filming a Tandem. Flming a tandem can lead to unstibility if you are in the habit of flipping to your back for the deployment, righting yourself then throwing out your PC. If you start to toss before you are stable again all bets are off for what is about to happen.
