HDR HC5

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys I have a question for the experienced camera guys. I'm one of the staff videographers at my dropzone and I've been jumping a pc109 sidemounted in a Bonehead box on a NVertigo X with a Rebel XT and sigma 10-20 lens up top. My 109 is having some serious touch screen problems and the LCD pull out screen sometimes just shows static (needless to say it's all fucked up) any ways I am wanting to get a new camera and i have been doing extensive research on cameras. Basically I have decided to go with the HC5 but i can't top mount it and i don't have the $ to buy a Flattop too. So basically I am wondering what your take is on sidemounting an HC5 on my helmet using either an L bracket or custom making a box for it. I was looking at the FF3 and i don't see why it can't be done on an NVertigo.

Thanks
Chris

I think what you'll find is the HC5 is a wide camera to start off with. Adding the width of your Nvetigo-X and a bracket will have your camera way out there, especially is you're used to a PC series cam. So, there's a big issue of riser slap and you have a cam that's not in a box... HUGE snag hazard right there. The FF3 is specially made to minimize the width of sidemounting an HC cam, but even with doing that it's still wide as hell. At least you'll get a fully enclosed cam with the FF3 that gets rid of the snag hazard when you get the eventual riser slap. I don't think it's possible to minimize that width to something practical by building your own box on a standard helmet, but if you can figure something out I'm sure others would love to learn how...

Doesn't LASA make a side mount box for the HC5?

The FF2/3 is the only side mount helmet that doesn't give me the heebie jeebies. For something as wide as the HC5, I'd want something REALLY smooth, not just an L-bracket or big wide d-box sticking way off the side of my helmet.
