Reusing DV tape...

I shot some video this weekend and one of the more experienced video flyers told me that there is significant degradation as a result of taping over an previous taping - even with Digital tape...

Digital is digital, isn't it?

the only re-using i've ever done is to back the tape up if the previous jump didn't yield anything worth saving. i've never used a tape again once i got to the end of it.

anyway, i've never noticed any quality degradation by doing what i mentioned above. maybe someone that has tried can add to the discussion.

Theoretically, MiniDV tapes have a 100,000 use lifespan. In the real world, it's about 80. In the air at 120mph... presumably less.

Yes digital is digital. You either get data or you don't.

Therefore the degradation isn't manifested in poorer quality footage but footage where whole blocks of the shot are missed and you instead get a shot of whatever it was you last recorded.

i usaly use a tape out get the video from it i want then clear it and reuse it once more(usaly to final prohjcts) i never had any problems...

I've seen this so I don't re-use. Kinda shitty to hand someone their tandem vid with a shot of someone else's jump in there.
