Sneak preview.
Here is the outline for my seminar at PIA Symposium 2005.

Remember: your first and last priority involves keeping your student alive!

Pre-levels: minimum 100 tandem jumps
Be comfortable doing tandems
Briefing by DZSO
practice jumps with licensed jumpers

Equipment: mini-DV camera
0.3 or 0.2 wide angle lens (prefer low profile)
hand-mount from Warner or Way Cool
visual altimeter
audible altimeter

Preflight camera: including confirming adequate tape and battery life remaining
Gaffers tape all switches (i.e. zoom) to fixed settings
(RECORD) a few seconds of scenery and company logo (OFF)
Strap altimeter to hand-mount

Pre-flight tandem rig

Train student

(RECORD) Harness student in front of camera – introductions and ask them why they are jumping (OFF)
Hint: set camera on table for best angle (view screen faced forward)

Stuff camera in hand-mount, fasten camera strap and strap to wrist (STAND BY)

(REC) Walk to plane, a few seconds to identify airplane (STAND BY)

(REC) Video takeoff, pan around cabin and finish on student’s face (STAND BY)
Hint: return camera to wrist or stuff in helmet to protect it.

(REC) Film attaching shoulder hook (STAND BY)

(REC) Pan from shoulder hook to scenery, finish on student’s face (STAND BY)

As plane turns on jump-run, turn camera to (STAND BY) and do one last check of switches, focus, etc.

(REC) Begin with student’s face, then pan to video door opening and other jumpers exiting, keep camera rolling as you slide student towards door
Hint: with Cessna, use camera hand to grab top of doorframe, then grab strut with camera hand.
Hint: with King Air, etc. get camera hand outside door and push off with left elbow

Normal tandem exit, keep lens pointed at student’s face

Thumbs up after handles check

Pan to student’s knees and back to face

Pan up to drogue – just before pulling. Video line stretch and most of opening, then focus on student’s face for comments.

Film student grabbing right steering toggle, then pan to look down (STAND BY)

(REC) Spirals to right. Hold camera overhead. (STAND BY)

(REC) Last turn onto final approach. Keep camera running through landing and first comments after landing. Pan to scenery. (OFF)

After you return to hangar and un-harness student, show them raw footage and ask them if they would like to buy video.

Hand-cam video is gravy.

although handcam captures all the skydive it will never be
as good as a freefall camera man, and continues to add to the soulless dropzones that have no fun jumps or camera people.
