A Better Canopy Wing Loading Calculator

Recommended Posts

There was no handy canopy wing loading calculator, so i made one by myself:
http://pureskydive.com/canopy-wing-loading-calculator/

  • Easy switch between kg/lbs

  • You can drag not just weights and canopy size, but also desired wing loading to see canopy size that matches.

  • Works on mobile touch devices too (Few tweaks are still needed, but functionality works)

  • Last entered values are stored into cookies

  • Link to share your values is available

Suggestions and new ideas are welcome.

You've got a 1664 sq ft canopy & your rig is only 13#?
Must be made of faerie fur. ;)

and now make it go to 4.0.
With all the XRW going on lately that'd be a reasonable extension)
Thanks for your effort!

Improved ranges visual proportions and made up to 4.0 WL.
Thanks for suggestion.

Just to be clear, ALL equipment needs to be in equipment weight, not just h/c and parachutes.

In your own weight, if that was your naked weight, your clothes etc need to be part of the equipment weight too.

When you weigh your rig, toss all your stuff into the pile too.

Helmets, jumpsuit, etc etc all weigh something.

Or just put all your gear on and step on a scale - that is your actual suspended weight.

(If this was already covered, I apologize for repeating.)

i just measured myself this morning and my mirage g4 with safire 169 and a 170 reserve is around 10kg.

can i ask - shouldnt the lower end of the scale have a .7 minimum or something?

100 jumps, 80kg jumping a 350 canopy!?

Setting minimum wing load something like 0.5 or 0.7 makes sense, thanks for suggestion.

Looks off,
it shows that me (exiting at 280ish right now) under a 170 is high end of advanced with 600-1500 jumps.
But i dont have that many jumps....

Joking aside, you want to add currency, jumps in last 12 month.

I could add IQ slider as well :) Each person and case is different and there is no perfect calculator and there is no need for one. To make final decision there are instructors and guys with more experience than you to talk to. Someone learns faster than others, someone slower. Somebody can make 500 jumps in 2 years, someone in 10. There are so many canopy designs available now. Some dropzones have obstacles, rivers and wood near, some are based in desert. So I can end up with more than 10 and more different variables that you need to consider before choosing canopy size. As it states under the calculator - it is informational only. When choosing canopy, you must also take into account other important factors like canopy design, jumps last year, etc. There are also good resources under calculator on how to choose your next canopy.

Calculator is good starting point or nice tool if you're an expert and want to see how adding a digital camera of 1kg will affect your wing load on your 79ft2 canopy.
