How aggressively did you down size?

Recommended Posts

1-7 Navigator 260
8-11 Navigator 240
12-20 Navigator 210

*bought own rig*

21-300 Pilot 188 @1.3
And that's where I'm going to stay for 100-150 jumps until I'm able to fly it properly. Then probably going to downsize to a 170ish :-D Yeah, I'm pretty slow compared to others... :D

List is more or less in correct order. Canopies I only did a few jumps on may not be 100% accurately listed in the proper place as they were borrowed while I had another wing I was flying. One abrupt meeting the ground at just under 500 jumps when I tried the Xaos 78. Just bruises though.

Exit weight: 180lbs

Why did you only do 1 jump on the Xaos?

***Usually I've been very reluctant to post this kind of information for the reason that I don't want to listen to all the flaming it could result in. But since I just came home from a canopy course where I received a lot of nice words from my coach about my flying, I couldn't care less about the potential flaming, so here it goes :)
#0-40: PD-260/230/210
#41-50: Sabre2 190
#51-190: Sabre 170
#191-299: Sabre2 135
#300-400: Sabre2 120
#401-624: Katana 120
#624-632: Katana 107
#633-now: Velocity 96 @ WL 2.0

Back when I was flying my Sabre 170, I almost smashed myself. That is without a doubt the most valuable lesson I have ever had in this sport and I will never forget it.
My transition to the Katana was because my canopy coach told me that I was ready for it, and the transition to the Velo was because i felt ready for it. After seeing my fly the Velo, my coach was impressed with my flying.
If you want to downsize and especially if you want to downsize as agressively as I have, please do yourself the favour of speaking to someone who knows what he/she is talking about.

This is fun reading!

I must say that I've learnt a lot and I've become smarter over the last couple of years since writing my first post on this thread. But to be honest, the only downsizes I kind of regret are the first ones. Going to a Velo when I did was a fine decision - but only combined with the fact that I received good coaching!

If you have your head up your ass thinking you know it all, skydiving is not the sport for you. But if you're willing to learn from qualified people and to do what you're told, even though it might be the most fun thing to do, you're probably going to do good.

For the last 300-250 I've been flying a Comp Velo 90 which I don't plan on swapping out for something smaller anytime soon. It's fast enough for me.

A year ago I tried a VK. Then I bought one ;-)
Did 150 or so jumps on a VK90 and now I have a VK84. Awesome canopy. I was worried that it would be too small for work jumps, but luckily it isn't. I love that canopy!

I didn't like the short control range and the lack of rears in comparison to the JVX trimmed VX I was flying before. Also chose to take a step back to my 105 Jedei after rear riser stalling the Xaos and hitting the ground.

Great info, sadly rear riser stalls happen pretty much without warning, when you need them most and the wing dropping you is instantaneous. Thanks

No, it should be a replacement for JVX

Something between Leia and JFX, nice long dive but not as responsive on harness as a leia, which should be good for freestyle.

This is what they say at least.

Jumps, Canopy, Size, WL
0-50, Rentals, 190+, <1.0
50-150, Sabre2, 190, 1.0
150-300, Sabre2, 170, 1.1
300-450, Sabre2, 150, 1.3 to 1.5
450-600, Sabre2, 135, 1.6

I thought I took an aggressive downsizing approach (male in my 20s). I have done 3 structured canopy courses up until now and I have felt really competent landing all those wings in all conditions on the dot. Kind of want to switch planforms but still need to dial in my SA2 135 before changing it up, this wing is impressive.

Interested to know people's accounts of how quickly or aggressively they down sized canopy.

Please, this is not a thread for people to start preaching the dangers of downsizing. We are not all created equal and different folks are willing to take more risks than others. To some this is silly but to the majority, jumping out of a plane in the first place is just plain stupid (let's not forget that).

Let's hear your downsizing story (good or bad).

Downsized from 230 to a 170 at 20 jumps, and downsized from my 9 cell 170 to a 6 cell 135 at 75 jumps, and am still landing without having to take a single step...all this downsizing and i still dont feel fast enough
