Pilot Chute Hesitation

Recommended Posts

Hello Guys,

I am jumping a wings container with a completion velocity 79. From day one I get pilot chute hesitation on short delays i.e. sub 3 seconds, however if I go to a 5 second delay the container opens ok. As anyone experienced this before? if so any advice how to make the bag come out of the tray when I throw the pilot chute sub 3 seconds.

Or just delay always 5 sec. I got the same thing on my containers, pilot chutes love wind.

If you are at a Cessna DZ tell the pilot to keep up the power that will also give you some momentum forward and would generate enough speed to make your 3 sec delays open just fine

The hesitation is caused by insufficient force to lift the weight of the bag and canopy out the container, it's not going to be the pin tension causing the hesitation, I would go for a larger pilot chute size and ensure proper pin tension.

I got my Wings container in 2005 and always had problems with pilot chute in tow with subterminal openings, and had some very long tows on some CRW jumps. Last year I got a Precision pilot chute from Paragear. I think it is the same size but has a longer bridle. No problems so far.

The flap idea I had not heard of. Makes sense, because it stays closed, which always seemed strange to me.
