deploying and flying small (WL ~ >3.5 ) parachutes.

Recommended Posts

Hey, if anyone is doing it, it would be interesting to hear on the forums. Or, Calvin, if you do talk to someone, summarize it here.

Steve Curtis at least used to do such jumps. Maybe track him down at Skydive Arizona?

I've only done one jump on my cutaway-only 37 canopy. (WL 4.7) It's a Stiletto 97 with 5 cells removed and trailing edge trimmed. So I'm not exactly a regular.

Let's not have this thread degenerate into general warnings about the dangers of miniature canopies.

The only person I can think of that has done or is doing super-high wingloading jumps recently is Bruno at SD Dallas. He used to post here as Steel. He's on Youtube flying 50sqft JVXs loaded well over 4.

Agreed. I am glad this was the first response.

I am looking for info for a non-skydiving related project. It goes without saying deploying small canopies like this is incredibly dangerous.

When soft links first came out (well, about 6/7 years ago), he and I put them on that 50 one night in the hangar. The next morning he asked if I'd follow him out on a HnP in case he had to chop so I could follow his canopy down. It opened fine and I watched (From above, needless to say) as he thru it into 360's and was damn near in freefall again. I can remember thinking... Hope them new fangled links hold up when he gets low. It was something to see him doing that at 4.2:1
Nobody has time to listen; because they're desperately chasing the need of being heard.

Jeff Provenzano and I have worked on projects where he was under a Xaos 21, 21 sq ft canopy. How about telling us what it is you are trying to do so we can better address your questions?

. . . he was under a Xaos 21, 21 sq ft canopy. . .

A question off OP's topic - is a canopy that small packed like larger canopies in a D-bag, regular container, and used with a PC, or are there special procedures and methods employed?

It's in a D bag but it is direct bagged out of the aircraft, same way Lugi does it on his 37'. You can see the video of the 21' launch HERE
