Voodoo's Reserve system

Recommended Posts

Is there anything that stands out about the Stealth pilotchute reserve system that RI uses? Good or Bad.

That's a pretty general question. Why do you ask?

The reserve system on a Rigging Innovations Product is just fine.

Your Profile says you have 20 jumps. Are you looking to purchase something?
My grammar sometimes resembles that of magnetic refrigerator poetry... Ghetto

Stealth pilotchutes offer two advantages, they are narrow and they are strong.
When the Stealth pilotchute was introduced in 1991, it was one of the first small diameter pilotchute caps. Small pilotchute caps became increasingly important as containers got progressively narrower during the 1990s.
Diameter does not matter when pilotchutes are exposed (i.e. Javelin and Racer), but can matter when they are buried under 4 flaps (ie. early Talon and all Vectors). Ironically, most manufacturers still use large diameter pilotchute caps. It took RWS a lot of years to make their old style, (Vector 2) large diameter reserve pilotchute work with narrow Vector 3s and Microns.
Back when the Stealth pilotchute was introduced, both Rigging Innovations and Relative Workshop were having problems with piltochute springs getting softer over time. RWS solved the problem by introducing the Vector 2 pilotchute,
RI solved part of the problem with the Stealth pilotchute, then they back-loaded Stealth spring technology to re-spring thousands of old Talons. It was an expensive process.

The third advantage to the Stealth is that it is integrated with a fourth generation freebag. (Note 3rd and 4th generation freebags are often referred to as molar bags because they have only one grommet up the middle, ergo simpler packing and the closing loop never rubs on the reserve canopy.)
While most reserves just pile the pilotchute on top of the freebag, Stealth-compatible freebags have a pre-sewn "crater" for the base of the pilotchute to nestle into. Better riggers know how to create "craters" in the freebags of other rigs, but the process requires extra tools and extra skills, not all of which are mentioned in packing manuals.

Just an uninformed opinion but....if you don't have a lot of jumps I don't think a Voodoo would be a good choice. The only complaint I have ever heard is because the container is cut in a more "rounded" fashion as opposed to most containers being "square." The problem this causes is that the container really only fits 1 size main canopy well. Everyone says they "Don't look good" when they try to put a smaller canopy in it. Being that you have low jump numbers you will most likely down size several times while you own your first container. Just something to think about......

Got the voodoo, flies great

rigger rob, another question re. the stealth pilot chute
when pushing in the spring RI states that you have to put the pilot chute 'mesh' inside the pilot chute spring ( and you may not pull the 'mesh' -hope it 's the correct word)out.

do you understand what I mean , do you have any explanation why they suggest you to do that?

Thanks

Kurt

Stealth pilotchutes have cylindrical springs, so you have to stuff the mesh and fabric in between spring coils - as you compress it - to prevent coil-lock. Not a big deal as long as you follow the packing manual.

In comparison, most other pilotchutes have conical springs which are almost rigger-proof.
