When everyone on your DZ tells you NO asking here doesn't help.

It doesn't matter what you tell people, how much you try to help them. It doesn't matter if its on the internet or in person, some people just simply have to be grounded to protect not just themselves but everyone else in the sky at that DZ.

Hopefully his DZ will ground him from that canopy and let the other DZs in the area know as well.

What I'm also wondering is who sold him the canopy and if he was truthful in talking to them.

SIGH...keycaps....

well good luck with all that we aren't judgmental we operate on a very logical stance...a + b usually = c unless there is something going on that we dont know about like the guy is all about canopy spends a jump every day pulling high and wailing on shit...or similar...

so we usually assume that person with 600 jumps flying velo will pound into ground and usually either a wind up in wheel chair...or b die...

we prefer neither... we like having people excited abotu canopy flight around...in fact maybe tha attitude comes from the fact that we have lost people we like due to the exact same issue and it makes us a bit jaded...

so when we give advice even if it is snippy cause we have been burned a lot from similar situations...

good luck and be safe

Hi, just a quiet thought from the other side of the planet...
I find it curious that you felt the need to come back to this forum, specifically to share this information with everybody.

... you saw how upset people became the last time...

Anyway, I'm not judging you, it just makes me curious as to your reasons for buying the canopy in the first place...

I just wanted to say I hope you are clear on that... for yourself...

good luck with the new toy - be safe.

Do you mind if i ask a few questions?

1) Just what specific characteristic did you fall in love with?
2) How many jumps did it take to figure this out?
3) Whats your landing approach on this and from what height? (same question for your katana)

Its one thing to test jump..its another thing to order.

Just asking.

Nothing like cutting away down into the team you were filming!

Shit happens ... especially when you jump a highly loaded cross braced canopy. Probably not the best canopy choice for a 4-way camera flier ... but come on now ... we know 4-way camera fliers who also jump highly loaded cross braced canopies. At the risk of not progressing as a freefall specialist, I think I will stick to control environments such as hop n' pops and high pulls.

Thanks for digging that up. It should almost be made "sticky" for every new discussion on this that seems to happen every few months. It's actually eerie reading the words that were typed by the deceased. They didn't learn, but maybe someone else can... just maybe...

I would really like to thank all of the people (Josh, Todd, Tom, Jeff, Luke, Karen, Bryan, Stu, Tyson) that told me that I was a F*&%ING IDIOT and I was going to kill myself when I was a 2 or 300 jump wonder. And especially those that would take the time to teach the right way to learn. Yer the reason I am here today! (Ha ha, jokes on you guys!)

I don't know how many times it's been said, but here's one more.
THERE ARE NO SHORT CUTS IN LEARNING TO SWOOP!

This post is not directed at Smiley but instead is directed at everyone of us:

You know what pisses me off about society. The way we constantly judge people who are different from ourselves. Anyone one of us who jumps out of an airplane let alone purposely induces speed for our landings could be the next one to fuck up and no doubt there will be no shortage of people wanting and willing to slam the next person who fucks up.

Is jumping a cross braced canopy at 500-600 jumps smart? History and logic tells us that it is NOT the smartest thing to do? When shit happens, it happens real fast. What about 900-1000 jumps? What about 1500-2000 jumps? When is it okay to be jumping a high performance canopy and inducing speed for ones landing? We are all different and what was the norm yesterday many not be the norm tomorrow. Obviously if someone is dedicated, seeks coaching, allocates time towards canopy control and does their swooping in controlled environments, well they are showing more respect for the dangers than some yahoo that just wings it and they will likely have a better chance surviving this less than safe discipline. But none of us (even the pros) are immune from a momentary lapse of judgment.

What is my point in all of this? No way am I endorsing the person who is behind this thread. Hopefully he realizes that “he is not all that” and he shows respect for what we do up there because the margin for error is pretty small. But careful passing judgment on others people, because the shoe could very well be on the other foot some day.

I have been hanging on dz.com forums since 2001. Some of these threads repeat themselves with clockwork like consistency. Same questions, same kind of decisions, same kind of advice... with the same results. I dont even participate much in these topics, other then a smart ass remark like the one i made in the beginning of this topic.

BTW, another thing i find amusing is the wise advice from "yahoos" that have broken themselves due to their poor decisions. Now that they have a little more experience they are saying i did it got x-rays to prove it so don't do as i did. I am not pointing fingers at anyone here, but if you get upset at this statement... well, then i guess the shoe fits...

I probably sound like an asshole or a smart ass... that's quite possibly because i am. But what kind of attitude can be expected when you observe the same bad decision making, arrogance of a fresh D-licensed "expert" and bad shit in the air and on the ground repeating themselves month after month, year after year?

I know plenty of 4-way camera flyers that jump crossbraces without issue. I've had one chop during a training jump. If the guy in the video had been a) more over the top, and b) had waited until the team had started tracking, then he'd have had plenty of room to have a mal.

As it was, he was off to the side and deployed before the jumpers started tracking, contributing to the lack of separation. I'd also be curious as to how far the 4-way jumpers actually tracked.

Very true. However the ones who truely understand that it can happen to any of us are the ones who worry about others - especially those who display the attitude of "I'm special or too good for that to happen".

If you're not thinking that it can happen to you (and believing it) you're not looking for the signs that it IS happening to you.

The choice is far less of a concern than the attitude.

I'm currently bored with my Manta and want a little fun.

So I'm borrowing my friends 87 sqft something-or-other.

So's here my question:

Should I have an ash dive, or get buried with a tombstone so friends can visit?

edit: I'm really very talented with canopies, I can get it in the bag and everything. On my first try.
