yardhippie 0 #1 October 2, 2006 I know the subject has been discussed a couple times but I'd like to revisit b/c Im in the market for some new swoopy shoes. My current pair are New Balance 812 (I think), a mid-grade running shoe. Lots of cushion, good arch support and easily accommodates my ankle brace. The bad thing is the soles have plenty of traction and so dont slide very well at all. Im looking for a pair with a good cushion for those ones I gotta run out or get a heel on some hard ground, but with less aggressive tread. So, what do you wear, and why?Goddam dirty hippies piss me off! ~GFD "What do I get for closing your rig?" ~ me "Anything you want." ~ female skydiver Mohoso Rodriguez #
AggieDave 6 #2 October 2, 2006 Etnies. Its your typical skateboard/BMX shoe. I've had this pair for over 1000 jumps and they're now wore out. So they've been good to me. Why Etnies and not Airwalk, Vans, etc? Well, Etnies fit wider feet very well and I have wide feet. You can order them off their website with custom colors, if you want to be a complete gear fag.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." rhys 0 #3 October 2, 2006 we'll any good skate shoe, should do. vans are actually not that great(they sold ot) and don't offer the support of Adio, Circa, DC etc(high quality skate shoes. i really like my Adio(kenny andersons) and circas for swooping, any skate shoe will have you no your ass when you try to walk up a steep grassy bank so great for swooping. soles that grip on griptape are slippery as hell on grass etc. support is where it's at!!"When the power of love overcomes the love of power, then the world will see peace." - 'Jimi' Hendrix

SkymonkeyONE 4 #5 October 2, 2006 I wear three different brands of skate shoes: NikeID (custom built-to-order Nikes), Sketchers, and Vans. All have enough support for me and all have swoopy soles. Want the support of running shoes, but with slick soles? Grind them down! I could never, personally, jump in running shoes. Chuck

AggieDave 6 #7 October 2, 2006 Looks interesting, kinda pricey though. I wonder how those shoes would grip on the grip tape that you find on a majority of steps/doors/floors on jump planes? Well, thank you YardHippie, this thread finally got me off my butt to go buy another pair of Etnies. The ones I've had for a while are definately WELL past their usefulness.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." bob.dino 1 #8 October 2, 2006 Also worth considering: Adidas Samoa or Samba. Rubber on the front, decent cushioning (the Samoa was originally a running shoe, and the Samba was for indoor soccer), and a tread that's not too grippy.
grue 1 #9 October 2, 2006 Any indoor soccer shoe should do the job. I use Umbro Brasilias, but I also use my Sambas sometimes.cavete terrae.

CanuckInUSA 0 #11 October 3, 2006 LOL ... I've never worried too much about what was on my feet just as long as the shoe gave me some basic support. Most of the DZs I've jumped at have had rough landing areas so surfing my landings usually would result in a face plant. So having slick soles just wasn't a big deal. I've thought about using my Hanwags (a paraglider boot for those who don't know about them), but they have stiff ankle support and may not be the best tool for swooping. But right now, if I'm lucky enough to be able to swoop a pond, I'm using my oldest running shoes that I have and all other jumps I'm just using whatever running shoes I may have bought at a place like Payless Shoes. I need to worry more about my flying techniques and currency more than what sort of shoes I'm wearing. But that's just me. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

justchrisdsp 0 #16 October 3, 2006 i like my saucony's, they've lasted for a little over 1000 jumps and they dont have too much traction, enough to slide out if you need, and at the same time they have enough traction for those run outs you get. plus they are like 20 bucks The only bad skydive is your last! chris "sonic wookie" harwell Piedra-belluda-roja Rodriguez

andyflylife 0 #18 October 3, 2006 QuoteWhatever skate type shoe is avaliable at Payless Shoe Source at the time. Like it! In the UK we've got 'Sports Extra' and other such discount stores that sell heaps of cheap trainers with a selection of skate type ones. Im using Airwalks at the moment! It just occured to me.... swooping/skydiving must be one of the few places where trainers look cool with the laces tied up!! "swooper 24/7, 365!" fool 0 #19 October 3, 2006 I wear bowling shoes... not the clown type ones you rent at the alley, ordered ones from a catalogue... I sucked at bowling so they told me I should take up skydiving. A close second are the old kangaroo's with the little pocket in the tongue. I ususally keep a condom in there (you never know when you need protection), or a rubber band, a pull up cord of some other assortment of doodads... Another cool thing about the kangaroos is the velcro instead of the laces. It makes it soooo much easier to get your shoes on and off when you are changing jump suits, or when you feel the urge to spontaniously strip at the DZ (I can't tell you how many times that being naked has proven my point over some heated discussion at the DZ, and impairment to my getting naked quickly ddoes nothing to drive my point home). So what is the point of this post, you may be asking? Well I think this thread is mooth, and we should return to discussing things such as Team Extreme and trying to sell each other JVX's...
