UK Groundlaunching

Recommended Posts

I've been using my Sabre 135 - I've found that the winds and slope need to be pretty specific to get any good distance possible though.

I know what you mean about small hills - the midlands are too flat for any good days out, hence the trip up north! B|

Hi Trig.

There are some paragliding sites on the N. Downs (Thurnham springs to mind) not far from Folkestone... but I'd be careful as I don't suppose the D&FHGC would be particularly pleased if you got in their way (nor would the landowner).

Site access in going to be an issue!

There are a couple on the north downs and I've spied a few potentials on the South downs but like Rich says access will be a problem.

Does anyone have any experience ground launching in Scotland? is it possible for instance to get the Cable car up the Nevis range and make your own way back down?

I checked some slopes out in the Peak District near Buxton that looked great. Would need some more planning and land checking before i attempted launching though, and there are Paraglider dudes that you would have to check in with so as not to "step on there toes" if you know what i mean?

check the picture.

Nice hill. But for one of 4 wind direct.
Above 100 meters.

But i give you few recommendations:
- use harness without reserve
- remove slider and pilot suite
- set canopy above head in stable position
- running max as you can and turn brakes down to 1/2.
- after rise, slowly turn brakes to full speed for comfortly flare and landing.

Ive done a couple of launches before on a smaller hill, but thanks for the advice anyway. Ive got a harness/container with no reserve in it, so now im just waiting for my new skydiving canopy so i can use my current Sabre 135 for Groundlaunching. I intend to remove all the deployment stuff before i launch!!

Before going to test any slope i try to get many photos of interesting me slopes in various foreshortenings.

It gives me more information about:
- wind direction
- basic angle of slope
- landings areas

sadly there does seem to be a definite lack off information in the UK about ground launching, there may be number of suitable sites but most off us wouldn't really know what to look for or techniques/ideal conditions ?.

Nice ground launching site Sysop:)
