skydive4play 0 #1 March 5, 2002 I currently have a 170 reserve and a 170 main. When the time comes for me to down size my main to a 150, is it ok for me to have a reserve that is bigger then my main? If not, what can I exspect if I were to have a duel canaopy opening? Any info. would be great...Lead Follow Or Get The Hell Out Of The Way!!!... skydive4play 0 #3 March 5, 2002 Yes, I have that tape but it says nothing about one being larger then the other. Just curious to how the reserve would fly in comparison to the 150 main??Lead Follow Or Get The Hell Out Of The Way!!!...
n2skdvn 0 #4 March 5, 2002 your reserve would fly more docile than your main .is your current main zp of f11 and what do you plan on getting for the 150 main??dont let your mind wander.....its to little to be left alone......
skydive4play 0 #5 March 5, 2002 The reserve is a 170 Tempo and I currently own a Hornet 170 ZP. In the future I will buy a 150 Saber2???? I still have many more jumps on this Hornet. I love it and it has done me well with learning more aggressive canopy manuvers, probably another 200 jumps and I plan on making this change...Lead Follow Or Get The Hell Out Of The Way!!!... n2skdvn 0 #6 March 5, 2002 your reserve is f111 if you ever have to deploy it it will fly alot diffrently than your zp 170 just keep that in mind but having a larger reserve is completly ok ad deciding on keeping your current main for awhile is a smart move learn your canopy skills first no need to rush down in size btw whats your weight??dont let your mind wander.....its to little to be left alone...... skydive4play 0 #7 March 5, 2002 Yes, I got the same advice from an x-Golden Knight about taking my time. I am in the Navy and we jump the 370 f-111 it is like a damn bus... Anyhow my exit weight is about 200lbs. I have about 130 jumps on the Hornet and about 250 all together. Still learning and still eager to learn more (the right way)Lead Follow Or Get The Hell Out Of The Way!!!...

AndyMan 7 #9 March 5, 2002 The only issue you have with bigger reserves then main is the comfortability of having two canopies out. Drastically different canopies simply do not handle well when you've got two out, and the reserve is signicantly bigger. There hasn't been a lot of testing with this scenario. One test was actually done just a few weeks ago. I've said that two out doesn't work well when the reserve is significantly bigger, but I'm not going to qualify what "significantly bigger" means. Some other people will chime in here, but I don't think your 170 is significantly bigger then the 150. The test used a 107 stiletto and a 170 reserve I think... _AmICQ: 5578907MSN Messenger: andrewdmetcalfe at hotmail dot com Yahoo IM: ametcalf_1999
eames 0 #10 March 5, 2002 I'm anxious to see the results of those tests....I'm jumping a Xaos-21 98 and a PD160R. I justify this with the following logic: The chance of having two canopies out is lower than the chance of simply having to use the reserve for its thoroughly tested "conventional" use. So I picked a reserve that will withstand a terminal opening with my 235 lb. exit weight, rather than get a PD106R because it "might" fly more compatibly with my Xaos-21 98. I would rather take my chances with two inflated, yet possibly incompatible, canopies rather than HOPE that my 106 will withstand terminal opening shock (a terminal reserve opening is more likely to happen anyway, I think...).p.s. My container is a Mirage G3 M3X-- and it looks great.Jason
skycat 0 #11 March 5, 2002 The last test was with a Safire 189 and a Stilletto 97. Check this threadWe were going to test a lightning 126 and the stiletto 97 but it was to damn cold to do a hop-n-pop from alt.
Kris 0 #12 March 6, 2002 Keep in mind that your Tempo 170 really isn't a 170. It's probably closer to 160-165 and the actual size on a Sabre 150 is really 159. They are closer in compatibility than you think and even if they were really 20-30 square feet off they should still be fine together in a two out as they are not known to be radical canopies. Floater 0 #13 March 6, 2002 | Keep in mind that your Tempo 170 really isn't a 170. It's probably closer to 160-165 |The invoice on my Tempo 170 says it's 178sf. Just thought I'd throw that in.Lee
skydive4play 0 #14 March 6, 2002 I am currently deployed for a couple of months and do not have the paper work on my Tempo,,,,,,,,,, so what is it,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, a 170, a 178, or closer to 160-165??? riggerrob 558 #15 March 6, 2002 I will refer to my PIA chart today at work to give you exact sizes in square feet.Don't waste your time comparing one number published by Performance Designs and a second number published by PISA.

According to Sandy Reid, who does canopy measurements for PIA, the Temp 170 is closer to 178 sq ft. He's going to send me his latest PIA measurement results in a few days (sq footage and pack volume for all reserves) and I will share them when I get them.-bill von
Kris 0 #18 March 7, 2002 Thanks for the correction. I had heard from multiple sources that Tempo's were actually a bit smaller than stated. Nothing against Tempo's, I have one in my rig and am quite confident that it will save my worthless hide. (knock on a redwood)Kris
billvon 2,398 #19 March 7, 2002 >Thanks for the correction. I had heard from multiple sources that Tempo's were actually a bit smaller than stated. Well, just to make it more confusing, they sometimes are. The Tempo 150 is 144 square feet. Once Sandy sends me that list I will post it so it will be easier to figure out true canopy sizes and volumes.-bill von
riggerrob 558 #20 March 7, 2002 It would be best for us to wait for Sandy's most recent list.
