Meso 38 #2 December 10, 2015 Inline image attachments, to my knowledge, have never been enabled for private messages. In fact, we only enabled it for several of the forum categories even. The reason being that it is easy to abuse with meme images and pointless posts. The reason we don't have it included in private messages is a bit different. Private messages use a different system on our system (different database too), and with our CMS that inline functionality was never included in the first place. We're working hard behind the scenes to overhaul a lot of the site features and make them better and private messages will be one of the many, but more on that in the next few months.
