Bowling alley, skydiving facility proposed for Framingham-Natick line


An upscale, retro-inspired bowling alley, restaurant and indoor skydiving facility could be added to the shopping mecca on the Framingham-Natick line.

BRE DDR Shoppers World LLC has filed plans to build a 21,000-square-foot Kings Bowling Alley with a restaurant at 19 Flutie Pass in Framingham, the street connecting Shoppers World and the Natick Mall. A 7,500-square-foot skydiving facility, iFLY, is proposed to sit on the other side of the town line in Natick.

The 12.8-acre redevelopment site, straddling the border, is currently a vacant lot. It was formerly used as a snow dump and for commuter parking and overflow parking for the AMC cinema across the street.

The Framingham Planning Board is scheduled to open a public hearing on Sept. 10 on the plans for the bowling alley and separate 9,500-square-foot restaurant in Framingham.

The $1.1 million project is proposed to create 20 permanent and 230 part-time jobs.

Property owner BRE DDR and its affiliate DDR Corp filed its plans simultaneously with both towns for 19 Flutie Pass in Framingham and 1391 Worcester Street in Natick.

BRE DDR is seeking special permits from Framingham for restaurant use, indoor amusement use and land disturbance and site plan modifications to decisions the Planning Board made back in 1994 for Shoppers World.

The Natick Planning Board is scheduled to open a public hearing on Sept. 16 to start reviewing plans for the $612,000 skydiving facility.

The project is anticipated to create 25 full-time and five part-time jobs in Natick.

In an impact report, BRE DDR said it has the opportunity to redevelop the space now that it has renovated the AMC and reduced cinema seating by 56 percent, as “part of its overall efforts to continually modernize Shoppers World to keep pace with current retail trends.”

The plan calls for redeveloping 11.8 acres of the site, 8.4 of which are in Framingham.

BRE DDR, through attorney James Hanrahan of Bowditch & Dewey, LLP, was not available for comment Monday.

Plans call for three new buildings, landscaping and utility and stormwater system upgrades, along with bicycle racks, energy efficient lighting and reconstruction of the parking lot to accommodate 393 vehicles.

BRE DDR, which owns Flutie Pass, also proposes making various improvements to help with the increase in traffic, including on Shoppers World Drive.

Kings, the bowling alley, would offer a 160-seat restaurant service.

BRE DDR did not name the separate proposed freestanding restaurant, identifying it on renderings as “Eatery.”

Kings, which started with its first bowling alley in Boston’s Back Bay, has expanded in Massachusetts and around the country, including at Legacy Place in Dedham.

Its 26,000-square-foot Dedham location has 20 ten-pin bowling lanes with retro-inspired décor, private entertainment rooms and space for up to 600 guests. The spot has three premium bars and a full-service restaurant and lounge, serving American food, such as pizza, wings, salads, burgers and ribs.

They're saying this tunnel is 12'. I really hope that's wrong because we already have a 12' tunnel here. A 14' and I will go to it..A 12' and I'll continue to go to Skyventure NH for a much better rate.

I caught this in a news article from earlier in 2016:

It looks like this tunnel is scrapped for a while if not permanently.


The development was also set to include a new iFLY indoor skydiving facility, located just over the border in Natick. However, litigation filed in New Hampshire by another franchisee of the skydiving company blocked the business from opening, according to James Hanrahan, a lawyer representing DDR.

In a Sept. 22 letter to the town, Hanrahan advised that DDR wished to withdraw its pending applications before the Planning Board, indicating the iFLY concept was dropped, and that Kings "may not go forward with plans to develop an entertainment facility at the Property."

It was going to be a dwarf tunnel anyway so no big loss. Maybe this will open the door to another company who can put in a 14' or greater tunnel. Preferably walking distance from me.
