Launching 4ways into the Tunnel ..

Recommended Posts

Hi there,
my team wants to start with launching 4 ways from the door into the tunnel...
After walking in, taking grips and start flying we intend to switch to the next level ..

Any hints from experienced tunnelflyers?
(positioning, timing, ...)

We are preparing our easter-camp and are eager to test new funny things to improve our skills...

;)

just saw the Deep Blue Defenders (french 4-way ladies) having 3 "floaters" and 1 "diver" , they were always launching the team with no grips, I don't know what or how it should be in tunnel competition, but they are going now to Bedford World Challenge, so I guess that would be the normal launching standard.

I'm no expert having only done a couple of the basic launches, but the default is an F. Point and OC have their legs hooked inside the tunnel and everyone bunched up in the accordion. OC gives the count and everyone flies in. Obviously as you step in, you need to start flying, which requires pushing the legs back and staying up. Initially launches can be over done point and OC hit the wall, so don't put too much into it, and think about braking with the knee down if you do. Tail usually just flops in at the end and can often take their time (relative to the others at least). H is also another similar simple launch depending on what point you are going to next, with the same line up but tail gripping both OC/IC and has the advantage of anchoring them and stopping them from sliding too far in the tunnel.

These launch techniques came about from tunnel comp rules where time would start as soon as head and shoulders appeared inside the tunnel. This year, the World Challenge rules have changed so that the clock doesn't start until flying starts which has lead to more skydiver type launches with floating off the door (inside the tunnel) and as long as the net isn't stepped on, it's all good. This is giving rise to some new and interesting launches as Fish mentioned. In a recent interview with Bodyflight's Paul Mayer for the (my) new British skydiving podcast, he says that this rule is also being used at the Paraclete competitions, so we are starting to see some standardisation.
