Why was Orlando sold?

The first person to open one of these up in NYC can and will make enough to buy all the other tunnels around the world.

I actually looked into that. It is not easy. A zoning nightmare. A few guys wanted to build one here. They couldn't get anywhere in the City to build it. Actually had plans to build one on a barge. I still dont see how that is "do-able." A barge? Doesnt it seem like that would move around to much. [:/]

Bill's (former owner of SkyVenture) business is amusement rides, hence the reason for building the tunnel where it is, Amusement Attraction for Florida Tourist. He didn't even think the skydiver would take off on the tunnel thing so much. http://usthrillrides.com/

If I had the cash or the backing? I would build one on the water front in Newark or Hoboken. But to stay in the black you will have to have one where by you can fly the tunnel and say use the roof for a bar.
Keep it near the path to and from NYC that way people can get in and out easy but also offer the best view of NYC at night. Zoaning would be difficult but not as impossible as getting permission to sell drinks!
But NJ would be cheaper and easier than NCY.

Might be a bit noisy?

Closed system tunnel. If you can get a bit of water front property in Newark or Hoboken overlooking NYC. Yes a bar on the roof would make up for the extra cash you need when things get quiet.
Also Newark / Hoboken is in the center of 4 DZ's. 3 of which are rather big.
But the key would be access to power, people and local mass transportation.

NEW JERSEY?????
:S:S:S

The entire Mid-Atlantic population megalopolis (say, NYC through northern VA, and accessible points west) is un-served by a tunnel within range of an easy day's driving round-trip. So it certainly has the population to support one.

That being said, I'd think that the real estate in the metro NYC suburbs would be about the most expensive in the Mid-Atlantic region (and if you don't think the northern NJ mob would be adding to the cost, you're kidding yourself), with all the ripple effect one might expect from such high overhead: expensive to fund and build; expensive to run, staff and maintain; resulting high prices for customers. That, plus hotel and parking prices for over-nighters would be pretty expensive, too.

Shah, with your "MBA business model project" thread in mind, I'd think that farther south and/or west of metro NYC would be a more feasible business model to sell to investors.

NYC unless you could get huge money ($50mill +) would be a very difficult sell.
But Hoboken and Newark with their proximity to the city and mass trasport would do rather well. The general population in those two cities is younger and the medium income is significantly higher than most of the US.
IF (and that is a huge freaking IF) you could get a plot of land that looks on to the city and finance a build of a single 4m closed system tunnel that has a view of NYC, as in you can fly your tourist head off while looking at the evening lights of NYC, and if you could diversify your income with say a 200 person capacity bar on the roof....and a large van running in and out of NYC bringing in tourist into and out of the city for their times......well at that point write your own check.

Think about it, you are a tourist, hell you are a freaking local making $100k a year (which is what the average person makes in that part of NJ) and you had a choice, go to your local bar for your birthday with you 10 closes friends OR fly for 3 minutes for $60 (not including tip!) and see this!
http://www.awesomephotographyblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/NYC_at_Night_with_The_Empire_State_Building_Shining_Bright_Green_on_Tax_Day_09-04-15.jpg

And then join your friends on the roof at the 777 bar for a Dirty Sky Martini watching the big screens and seeing who was flying? $$$$$$$ ;)

Could it be done? Sure, the price of land in NJ is at an all time low. The recent economic slow down had made it hard to fund large scale apartment projects. How much would it cost? Who knows? All said and done maybe $20mill? But I'm told that there are two complete 3m systems sitting in storage which will never be used sitting some where on the docks of Newark. And if you can get approval under a community improvement project sighting you are creating jobs and what not......and the fact that there is a lot of money floating around?

It could be done. And it could be very profitable. It would just take one hell of a dedicated project manager and a professional crew of guys and gals on the staff.

We are talking uniforms and some serious accounting. But it could be done and you could be in the black in say.....under 5 years.

There is disposable income, there is the general population, there are tourists and there are a good number of skydivers.

iFLY Meadowlands... it was already in the works but with the sports complex never getting completed, neither did the 2 side by side 10ft tunnels...

Theres some kind of a loophole missouri about river boat gambling. So the smart guys built a casino on a barge No engines anchored ir real good and put in some kind of a berm to seperate the "river boat casino) from the river.

Don't gamble, never went on one but they are around maybe. Wave action not sure idf the is a issue. The stbility of the barge migh be doable with spuds driven into the river bed, (Think piling)

If theres a loophole and enough money, I think a good lawyer can make it work. A "gambling river boat" that doesn't have enging and is pinned into the river bed, without access to the river.

Agreed.

Were we not sky jumpers, it might go unnoticed.
I am damn near anti-amusement park. Them bitches is crowded and expensive. Much like all of I-drive. Over-priced and under-valued.
I don't see any advertising for locals outside the jumper community.
:P

I was there on Saturday with amstalder (and her hubby B|:D)

I walked outside the hotel and looked over and saw the tunnel, no advertising at all, and I was staying 2-3 blocks away.

everyone seems to be forgetting that Orlando was one of the 1st tunnels, when it was built there were only about half dozen world wide.
LV had a shitty little one, Raeford had the Mil tunnel and a few in Europe.

Funny looking building... what could that be? I think I'll drive by and check it out. If you live there, you're not going to care, but it sticks out to tourists and finding out what it is and getting info about them is super easy. I was tremendously happy that they were able to fit me in the day we called and could go do it. When I got home from my vacation I made a skydive w/in a week.

Almost 8 years later, a fiance, a whole shit ton of good times, friends and a couple thousand skydives, I am glad that I saw the place.

dosent that sound like a pretty sizeable potential customer market being missed? i havent lived near orlando for about a year and a half, but when i left the area the city wasnt exactly small, lol.
