MBA Business Case for a tunnel.

MBA Business Case for a tunnel.

I'm sorry to bother everyone, but where can I find estimates as to how much it would cost to build and operate a medium to large sized closed system tunnel?
It's a part of an EMBA project and I can't seem to find anything on google. A rough estimate would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you

$10 mill for a 4 meter tunnel.
That's what I was thinking. Including building the facility and total installation of turbines.

As for cost to operate. Safe to assume $1k / day in electricity?
And a staff of 5 with the usual overhead?

At a cost to the customer of $25/min?

That makes two of us shah269, I'm working on the same topic for my MBA, but in Europe. Just started two weeks ago. As of the Bottrop tunnel in Germany, the facility itself costed 4,6 million EUR. I plan to fly there in January anyway and use my trip also to visit the company that built and owns the tunnel. PM me, maybe we can help each other with this work.

Hmmm, Given the fact that a good number of tunnel projects are currently on hold, well, I think you choose a hard project.

Thank you! I will. I'm working on my marketing final right now. So I'm sorry i was not paying attention.

As for our project, we are speculating on how much it would cost to build and operate a large tunnel in Shanghai. With skydiving being all but impossible in China and a large young middle class with disposable money.....we thought it would be a hell of a giggle!
A tunnel / bar / god knows what else. As a joke we were going to call it "Blue Skies Over China"

...................................................................

Definitely locate it near a major city - that has a high tourist turn-over.
For example, the first Canadian wind tunnel was built (circa 1980) on the Trans-Canada Highway between Montreal (then the largest city in Canada) and Quebec City (the second largest city in the province).

The second Canadian wind tunnel was built in Niagara Falls, a popular tourist destination and close the Buffalo, New York.

The third Canadian wind tunnel was built recently in Laval, a suburb of Montreal (now the second largest city in Canada).

And the most recent Canadian wind tunnel is a temporary unit, erected in Delta/Surrey, less than a hour's drive from the International Airport. That also puts it less than an hour's drive from downtown Vancouver (the largest city on the West Coast of Canada) and less than an hour from the American border. Though their long-term goal is still to build a permanent wind tunnel beside the River Rock Casino (spitting distance from the international airport and along a Skytrain line). The Skytrain (light rail for commuters) is an important factor because many Vancouverites - especially teenagers - don't own cars because public transit is so quick.

When I visited the Sky Venture tunnel in Montreal on a Friday at 2pm I was amazed at two things.
1) That my friends and I had to wait in line to get our flight time in
and
2) That half the building was still being cleaned up from construction!

I spoke to one of the people, not sure if he was the manager or investor but he indicated that due to the demand they opened up sooner than expected and that they expected to be in the black much sooner.

And seeing the TWO bachloret parties that were ahead of us each of which had about 10 girls in their group I could see why!

Good luck on the MBA though ~ getting one of those is on my 'to do' list.

If you need it to progress in your current job, then go for it. Otherwise, I'd suggest waiting a few years as the job market for newly minted mba's stinks as you're competing against mba holders with years/decades of experience that are willing to work at less than traditional mba entry-level rates just to have a job. Plus, a lot of people decided the loss of income from grad school wasn't so bad in such a tough job market, so record numbers have applied/been accepted in recent years. Both of those means that there's an absolute glut of mba's right now, and even in economic recovery, there's going to be a larger supply than demand for a quite while.

Well I've been a manager of an office for a good 3 years now. This was just one of those things I needed. I was winging it and doing ok but...I really needed it to be a better manager.
And my employer offered to pay sooooooo who was I to say no.
I had my hopes up of meeting new and exciting women since the divorce occured the week before I started class......but......no. 7 dudes, 7 chicks.....who all have rug rats or little kids and can't seem to stop talking about them.

But I think I will do okish. I went to school for mechanical engineering for my BS I have a six sigma green belt and black belt, two patents thus far and a good 10 years experience so I think I may be ok....but who knows?

Wow next to no data on this subject?
Would it be rude if I just called one of the tunnels and asked about construction costs and operation costs?

Seriously? You're asking if doing some primary research is the right way to go? :S I'd certainly hope you weren't going to base your entire project on anecdotes you got from an online forum with other people doing your research for you.

Go to the SkyVenture corporate website. Look at the investor center. Right there that will get you a lot of information. Get in contact with them, tell them what you're doing and ask for more information. Call up your closest tunnel and see if you can schedule some time to talk to the general manager and/or one of the investors.

You're doing a project for a masters' program, not a 6th grade class project. Act like it.

Except for a few exceptions, I suspect that the number of tunnels on hold is not necessarily related to profitability.

It's just that tunnels
-- attract individual investors such as skydivers, who have more limited investment funds relative to Wall Street.
-- are a capital-intensive project, with potential cost overrun
-- can run into problems with municipal, from things such as electric supply to city ordanances, zoning.
-- when cost overruns occur, it is hard to convince angel investors to pitch in, because not everyone is familiar with tunnels.

--> Newark rights are tied up, I think. The upcoming Xanadu/Meadowlands mall, opening later 2011, is supposed to have iFly Meadowlands at one point.
--> There's alternatively Manhattan rights, but I think the rights to the area has already been tied up too, some investors wanted to put a Skyventure on a barge parked off Manhattan. You may have to purchase rights and/or due-diligence from someone else.
--> But go ahead and ask Skyventure if there is any leftover regional rights elsewhere.

But it would be nice!

but you know what I can't seem to find. Any floor plans of wind tunnels? How many sq ft does one need? 50k sqft?

The professor liked it, said it was even viable to build one in China! Go figure!
And a few of my friends are giggling about the idea of building one in NJ City HA!

Is he investing? How much?

There is talk....lots of unusual talk...I have no clue what the hell is going on. I'm on my day off due to the snow and I have fielded 5 phone calls from friends and friends of friends.

I may have to call up skyventure soon because there are questions I have no answers for....such as power consumption and how fast can it be built and license fees!
This is very nutty!

Does any one have any good videos with music of indoor skydiving. Mostly what I've seen has been SHIT!
