An Unusual Data Panel

Recommended Posts

While digging through my skydiving closet I ran across a somewhat old parachute with something very unusual on it - a hand-lettered data panel (see the attached photo). That's something I've never seen before anywhere else. It even says: "Made for Jim Watson". So, does anybody know Mr. Watson, I presume?

Custom built 300 sq', 5-cell high performance parachute.

There might be a market for that! :D:)

Very enjoyable post, John. Let us know what you find out!

Merry Xmas

There's something wrong in that sentence. I just can't put my toe on it.

There is more info on this unusual parachute, here:

For example, it's called a 5-cell, but it has 14 chambers like a 7-cell. I think it's called a five cell because there are only 6 span-wise rows of support lines, such that four of the five "cells" have three chambers each. So what's the official definition of a "cell"?

The Aqutron's were also trapezoidal in shape rather than rectangular - the trailing edge was a bit wider than the leading edge. This made them look sort of pigeon-toed in the air.

I've seen that thing a few times, on older gear, and more than a few times on Bill Gargano''s stuff (Quantum Parachutes). Cleaning out Bill's Shop after he moved was fun. Lot's of genius in that man's head!B|
