That would be SNM #17
He drowned Feb 5 1981 in Lake Elsinore.
TV commercial, he had a mal and used his reserve.
He landed in chest deep water. Was seen waving arms and taking off gear.
He stepped into a hole and took an hour to find him.
That's what the article says.

Someone else told me the same thing. He landed in a place he stood on the bottom of the lake with head above water and then started walking out. he apparently found some deeper water and drowned.

The 1981 fatality report, published in the July '82 Parachutist, reports (without naming names):
"An ASO with 1289 jumps, filming for PM Magazine, had a problem with his main, did a canopy transfer, and landed in a lake. He was observed standing in the shallow water. As he started to gather in his reserve, he stepped into a seven-foot hole, and the weight of the helmet-mounted camera plus the reserve prevented him from getting his head above water."
