Dinner with a local legend

Recommended Posts

Last Thursday I was invited to dinner by a former AFF student of mine, who's now a close friend. He's Italian, and in his mid 50's, and coming up on 1000 dives soon.

At dinner, at an Italian restaurant, I met the Italian owner, and later, after dinner had a chance to look through his photo album. He's D 7 in South Africa. C 3. B 1. Looking at the pictures of the gear, and the planes, and the youth of people we only see as old was inspiring.

I have much to learn about life, but I think I'm on the right path.

TOO COOL! B|

I just love it when stuff like that happens...:)
At a demo some years back, an older gentleman (VERY older ) was watching me pack with great interest.

I was making the usual polite conversation and 'basic' comments...when he asked if they/we still had licenses.

Turned out he held a double digit 'D', but quit after about 500 jumps because his wife felt he was pushing his luck! :)

The ole DooD was almost embarrassed when I ran and got my logbook for a signature, but in no time at all he fell right back into the groove...drinking our beer and tellin' stories about "The Good Old Days"! B|

I cant answer that.
I keep getting older and seeing new things . Its a wonderful time certainly, I just wish I hadnt beat the shit out of this body when I was younger so that it didnt remind me every day.

Ain't that the truth!!! 2500 round jumps mostly shooting down wind accuracy have taken there toll. Both knees and my back remind me every morning. Ahhh to be indestructable again like the NFGs.

Very cool indeed, Tonto - makes you realise how fortunate new jumpers are today with the modern equipment and training available. I started jumping at Bloemfontein Skydiving Club in 1979, lowest "D" in my logbook is D 181, Staf Du Plessis from 1 Parachute Batallion. Those were the days when toothpaste was still white ...

Peter, do I know you? I was the rigger at Sky Sports in 82 & 83. Used to jump at Pretoria and Klerksdorp. Your name sure sounds familiar.

I went back to my ancient history logbooks as I vaguely remember him, but alas the lowest D in my logbooks was D16, Beppe Piazzoli. This is hardly an uncommon signature in local logbooks as Beppe was an active skydiver until his fairly recent passing on.
