Fun Facts

Recommended Posts

My grandson gets these little packs of lunchables. They have Fun Facts on them. Todays reads: On April 18, 2000, the biggest parachute traffic jam in history happened when 588 parachutists jumped together from 7 airplanes flying at 12,000 feet. Does anyone know about this? I have not been to the DZ in 25 yrs and I know things have changed alot, but 588 at 12,000 ft???? I just can't fathom them at 12,000 ft. :S Traffic Jam? Hell yeah there was! Is this true? If so. Them-Them-Fuck Them :) Shit, I don't even think there were 588 jumpers at the DZ. I know you guys remember what I mean. ;)

Thanks Sparky B| I'm totally blown away. Just imagine leaving the DZ in the 70's and having no contact or computer for 25 yrs. Except for TV and the newspaper I have had no other source of DZ info. I feel a bit foolish and a little dumb posting sometimes, :$ but I am just grossly unaware and not at all up to date on skydiving. :( Reading dropzone.com is great fun for me no matter what my knowledge of the sport. :) ...SANDY

Hey Sandy.....I have a question. I see on your profile youve been in the sport for 35 years. From reading your posts that doesnt seem to be true.
You are either in the sport or you are not ?
Not criticizing.....just commenting.

> You are either in the sport or you are not ?

I think that's leaving out all the in-between states,
all the ways a person relates to jumping, physical,
emotional, mental ... and how, at any given moment,
all those ways are a certain degree true or not.

I even have multiple and contradictory feelings at
the same time about all those threads of relationship.

As do I. But....is a person that admittedly hasnt been on a drop zone in, say, 27 years...still "in" the sport ?

What's it to you either way?

Wendy W.
There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

I made a jump a month ago with a guy that docked on me like a "Battle Star"...and broke two of my fingers....

He's at the DZ all the time, but I personally don't think he's "In The Sport" if ya know what I mean!?;)

...he's definately not 'one' with the planet...YET!:S

:) I am into the sport still, not actually in the sport. Lost track of everything when I fell in love with a whuffo and stopped jumping. :( I got a computer in 2000 and it has helped me get in touch with friends I haven't seen for 25 yrs. B| The whuffo is gone but my love for this sport goes on. Hope I answered your question. :).....SANDY

No shit! :) The people are the same, but we all have made some physical changes. We have come of AGE. Aged like fine wine! You're not older, you're getting better! Who the hell said that stuff? Was not an older person I bet. Wish my aches and pains believed those sayings. :( It's all part of the process called life. Some women hate to admit their age. ;) Not me! I'm 59 in Sept. If you stop to think about it every birthday should be embrased. Isn't that the whole idea of life? To get another yr. of life under your belt, is to have escaped the grim reaper. :) Or should I say [Van Wrinkle]. :D :D :D Damn, I crack me up.:P......Buff

> Are you defending me?

Maybe I was now that you ask, but at the time
I was reacting more to a multiple reality situation
being artificially framed as an either/or choice.

Even if Bozo knows what he means by "either in
or out" it doesn't mean that everybody or even
anybody means the same thing with those words.

You can consider yourself "in", or be like me and
not even have a stance on the subject. I don't
even see skydiving as a sport.

I have a friend who started in the late 50s, made
about 600 jumps and then didn't jump for 37 years,
and then a couple years ago started up again.

I made a jump with her last Saturday.

Was she "in or out" just because she took a few
weekends off? Is there a boundary somewhere
between a few weekends and 37 years where
you suddenly change states from "in" to "out"?

I don't know.

It was curious thing for Bozo to say but I don't
know what he meant or what prompted him to
say it.

>I don't know if you remember me

I imagine I would if we met. I'm going to some kind
of SOS thing at Elsinore in a few months so if you
walk up and say "Hi, I'm Sandy" we can find out.

You sayomg people doing tunnel time shouldn't be logging it as freefall time :o sounds like a waste of money then>:(

I've heard people say "once a marine always a marine". IMO 10yr's back in day counts for a lot. It gets in your blood, we can still remember things, funny, sad, what, where, when, people etc.

Don't change it to 10 years Sandy. I had mine at 7 years and was nothing but trouble ;)

I posted that I was in the first 16 man diamond and the first 20 man papillon in a thread and got several emails from people wondering how that could be since I had just started jumping 7 years ago :D

After a few of these type incidents, I changed it to what you see. Like you, I still identify with the sport and still know a number of active jumpers. I occasionally attend a meet or drop by a DZ when I can.
