Salton Sea Drop

Recommended Posts

What kind of experience do you have?

The short list is:

Find someone with an appropriate aircraft that will rent it out, expect to pay for the travel there and back plus pilot's fees, but assume that it's likely that it won't be legal for you to ride there in the aircraft unless the original seats are reinstalled.

Obtain land owner permission for your landing site.

File a NOTAM (or have your pilot do it for the operation at least an hour prior, but no more than 24 hours prior.)

Jump.

Don't die.

You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously.

There are lots of ultralights/PPGs/PPCs that fly out of a little RV park/airstrip on the west side of the lake in Salton City. If you were to show up there on a weekend when there's a planned event like http://www.trikebuggy.com/sites/boogie_ss.htm, I'm positive you could get someone to drop you over Bombay Beach for a case of beer or $100. Many two-place PPCs and weight shift trikes fly there (illegally) without a sport pilot license so they won't care about NOTAMs. As long as you don't go in, no one will care.

You do know the lake stinks pretty bad and is surrounded by rotting dead fish most of the year, right? I've had some great flights with friends there but it's not exactly a bucket list destination for just a single jump IMO.
