gweeks 1 #1 July 17, 2008 Skydive Delmarva 8/16/08-8/17/08 The herd will reunite for some great skydives and some epic infamous night time antics. This weekend will also be a full moon and the 48th anniversary of Joseph Kittingers world record jump from 102,800 feet. During the jump he free fell for 14 minutes and 36 seconds and reached a maximum speed of 613 mph. Get your fill of Catfish, Shrimp and Blue Crabs. The price will be around $25. Please let manifest know at least one week in advance if you want to participate by calling 888-875-3540 or emailing [email protected]. About The Herd by Mike Schultz The Central Atlantic region was, for a considerable number of years in the ‘70’s and ‘80’s, endlessly entertained by a group of adventurous, impishly mirthful skydivers who occupied an old grass strip airport on the fringe of Gilbertsville PA. One of their annual events was known as ‘The Herd Boogie’, the most anticipated skydiving event of the year. … No one is sure how ‘The Herd’ evolved from a stellar competition team known as ‘The Circle of Fear’, composed of members of the United Parachute Club, but if you wanted to be somebody you had to spend time at their establishment. The apprehension of surviving a skydive was replaced by a concern for surviving the social antics of four days of being led through the night to the next day’s manifest by bonfires, impromptu forays through tent city looking for friends to ‘play’, fireworks, slugging down ‘Wapatuli’ juice, and all sorts of wild shenanigans. After sunrise, there was always at least one Herd member remaining standing to cajole everyone of the fragged-out partiers into exercises; primarily wheezing and gasping, and begging to be left alone. However, nothing retarded their enthusiasm for drying out the beer-soaked gear and packing up for some quality skydiving; usually very innovative. Sadly, after about 30 years since the ‘Herd’ heyday, they’ve dispersed (the DZ was sold for development), but their spirit and reputation lives on fondly in the hearts of the old-time skydiving community. Times have changed and the ‘Herd’ social mentality is fading. It was always predicted, and is apparently coming true, that the Herd members are arriving at their eventual destination of one of the four ‘A’s: Arthritis, Alzheimers, or Alcoholics Anonymous. We’re hoping that this Herd reunion will gather together enough of the Herd detritus to demonstrate to the new generation that camaraderie, joy, and raucous laughter are, after all, the real reason for skydiving. Be on notice that after hours, behavior usually begins with an R rating, proceeding to X, and finally XXXXXXXXXXX. Luckily, or maybe unluckily, we won’t see the one guy who would perform his morning calisthenics by attempting, for one hour, to suck his own ---. It’s said that he was finally successful and went off to live on a mountain somewhere. Ahhh, happiness!

3331 104 #15 August 18, 2008 It was a great weekend, I liked the casual attitude at http://skydivedelmarva.com/ I recommend it if you think your DZ is getting a little too uptight, or maybe too much drama. And a HERD load is still a HERD load, that was one big cluster fuck. Everyone did land safely. Oh yea, Saturday night I had ALL the crabs and fish I could eat and didn't pay a dime. I Jumped with the guys who invented Skydiving.
