Florida

Recommended Posts

Me and a couple of mates are off to Florida from blighty, probaly in May. Is this a good month for jumping (just checking its not high wind/rain month or something). Also which DZ's do people reccomend, looking for somewhere with plenty of socialising, and bars around ands about etc. Not that we're alcoholics or anything! Oh yeah and we want to jump really big planes as well!

Cheers peeps

Hmmmmmmm..............May........that's pretty late. The Florida "Season" is really over by then so I'm not sure exactly what you'll find. For a FUN DZ I would highly suggest Z Hills www.skydivecity.com/html/calendar/index.html They have a swoop pond, a decent bar, free internet access, and people hang out every night for a few beers after jumping. I'm just not sure what you'll find as that's getting into the "off" season in Florida. Z Hills starts their "Summer hours" then and are closed on Tues and Wednesday.

may onwards in florida gets very hot and humid, most afternoons you will get big build ups of cloud and heavy rain.
i went once beginning of may and jumping 07.30 till 11.30 ish and the maybe 15.30 onwards until dark but was very humid and unpleasant and rained almost every afternoon for two weeks.
go to california instead, or better still leave the kit at home and go to las vegas.

Check out Weather.com. It gives you the monthy averages for temps and rain. I gave you Deland's averages on the link for an example.

The previous poster was correct in saying that we get afternoon thunderstorms, but they rarely last all afternoon long. The humidity does get worse in the summer.

What Clay meant by "the season" was that we are very busy in the winter from the Northern jumpers coming down. Once their dz's open again, it's not as busy but the turbine aircraft still run every day or most days at the major dz's in FL.
