reserve question

Recommended Posts

OK, this is something i should know, but i dont and i started to question myself.

Rather than get to the situation and wonder i shall ask.

If there was a cirumstance where i wanted to pop my reserve without using my main, low alit for example.. should i cut away then grab silver, or just grab silver?

I've seen people say they only grabbed silver, but surely the main risers are over the reserve risers so wouldn't this cause problems?

I'm sorry for sounding so thick, but any info will be greatly learned

Thanks

Go straight for your reserve. Only exception might be if you had awful main riser covers. If you do, then the released risers might flop around enough to interfere with reserve deployment. Solution there is to fix the riser covers.

Pull silver first, if you were low them 3 seconds would cost you about 500ft.
I think the risers are designed to slide under your main ones anyway.....don't qoute me on that. ;)

Also if your reserve mals up then you still have your main attached.
..although i have only read that on here, its sorta sunk in. [:/]

The only purpose of the cutaway handle is so you don't deploy
your reserve into dragging garbage. If nothing is dragging,
there is nothing to cutaway.

As for the reserve risers, how do you think an AAD could work if a
cutaway was needed? When doing terminal at 750 feet, there isn't
time for your Cypres to tap you on the shoulder and request that
you cutaway first.

During TSO drop testing, the manufacturer had to prove that the reserve would open in a variety of scenarios. so they had to prove that the reserve would open with the main container empty, the main container full, with line twists on the reserve at a variety of weights and airspeeds, etc.

If you are down and dirty, pulling your cutaway handle is a waste of time.
If you are low enough to scare a Cypres, just pull silver NOW!

If you've got nothing out, you don't have time for anything but the silver. My recurrency instructor this year taught me to pull the cutaway if ANYTHING has deployed, such as a pilot chute, a horsehoe, etc, in order to minimize chances of an entanglement or double deployment. But if nothing's out, your reserve is good to go as is and the ground is only getting bigger.
